Deb – Manchester, Vermont
I read in your Recipes for your Perfectly Imperfect Life book, that “holding onto feelings of guilt can contribute to poor digestion”. Can you share more about this topic because I’m incorporating the Beauty Detox lifestyle and taking your supplements but still feel bloated. I rarely cheat and when I do it’s not really on food that’s all that bad. I’m at a loss and don’t know where to begin to narrow down why I’m still feeling bloated.
Autumn – Bend, Oregon
Is it possible that I’m subconsciously craving fatty foods? I consciously work on eating healthy foods and make sure I’m being active and meditating but I still get these impulses to devour a whole bag of potato chips and end up bloated. Any advice on how to stop these impulses?
Beth – Anderson, South Carolina
Is it healthy for my emotional and spiritual wellbeing to do a cleanse every few weeks? If yes, where do you suggest I begin?
Julie – Belmont, Wisconsin
Do you have any quick tips for those of us who really don’t want to focus on the uncomfortable feeling of “letting go” of emotional baggage? I think I’m spending too much time on trying to figure out how to get through these emotional detoxes that it’s making me even more bloated. Help!

Kimberly: Okay. Hi Beauties, and welcome back to our Thursday Q&A podcast where our topic today is letting go of bloating. And bloating is this huge, big topic which we get thousands of questions about. We have all experienced bloating to some degree. This is something that is of personal interest to me. This is something I’ve talked about in all five of my books from different angles and different degrees. I’ve looked at it from a dietary, nutritional, physical standpoint.
Kimberly: As my work has evolved, I’ve also looked at it from an emotional standpoint and a mental health perspective. And there’s actually amazing research that I have come across, especially in my last book, Recipes for Your Perfectly Imperfect Life, about how the thought patterns in our mind, even though we don’t see our thoughts, we don’t see our feelings, they have a tangible effect on our digestion, on our hormones, on our adrenal levels, on our cortisol, on our bodies, and actually can lead directly to bloating. So, I’m really excited to get into this topic. If you have been bloated before, if you are frustrated, if you want to find every way possible to prevent bloating, this show today is definitely for you.

Kimberly: And we have our amazing Solluna general manager Katelyn with us today who has gathered these questions for us. Hi, Kay.
Katelyn: Hey, Kay and hey Beauties. Great to be back. I love that we’re talking about this topic and dedicating a whole show to it because it comes up so often. No matter what cornerstone area people are working on in their life, bloating tends to come up one way or another. So, I think it’s great we’re going to talk about it in a really holistic way today.
Kimberly: Awesome, Kay.
Katelyn: Awesome.
Question 1: How does holding onto feelings of guilt contribute to poor digestion?
Kimberly: All right. Let’s hear the questions about bloating.
Katelyn: Let’s do it. Okay. So, Deb from Manchester, Vermont, I read your recipes for Your Perfectly Imperfect Life Book and it states that holding onto feelings of guilt can contribute to poor digestion. Can you share more about this topic because I’m incorporating the beauty detox lifestyle and taking your supplements, but I still feel bloated. I rarely cheat. And, when I do, it’s not on foods that are bad at all. And I’m at a loss and I don’t know where to begin about why I’m feeling so bloated.
Kimberly: Deb, thank you so much for your question. This is hitting right away the heart of the frustration that so many of us feel. Like I’m trying this, and I’m trying that, and I’m still bloated. So, first of all, I want to acknowledge you for really taking on aspects of the lifestyle which will better yourself and really help you longterm. I love that you are incorporating some of our Beauty Detox Solluna Principles and taking the digestive enzymes. The SBO probiotics and detoxy are fundamental to this discussion.
Kimberly: We want to make sure we’re dialed in physically, which is in some ways the easiest way to work first because it’s tangible and we can cut things out, we can add them, and we can very much more easily control that. So, first of all, I want to acknowledge that. And beauties, if you haven’t yet tried these products, I’ll run through them quickly. Digestive enzymes work on your food. So, when you take them right before you eat, they break down the food more quickly to prevent bloating and to make sure you’re getting the most nutrition out of your food. Food sits longer and longer in your system, it starts to release gases just like you smell dirty garbage in your kitchen. Because you’re smelling it, gases are released from the garbage, which is breaking down. And that is what creates bad smell. So, in your body, if the food starts to break down prematurely and it’s taking too long, you will often get bloated. So, digestive enzymes help move the food along.
Kimberly: Probiotics don’t work on the food, they actually work on your gut, very, very different. So, probiotics create that healthy microbiome to facilitate better digestion. And that will also help with bloating.
Kimberly: Detoxy is something you take at night. This works on waste. It doesn’t work on the food, it doesn’t work on your microbiome. It’s oxygen with Asc2P, this very potent form of vitamin C. And this basically helps to cleanse waste out of your system. Because, if we have waste backup, if we have impaction, it will stay in there. It keeps us from letting go as easily of wasted matter. It’s like this block. Think of a block in a pipe. And this will keep bloating going for a long, long time as well.
Kimberly: So, you want to make sure that you’re taking these supplements, which have been a huge part of my healing journey. You want to make sure that you’ve given up dairy and gluten, that you’re following Beauty Detox principles. So, that’s the first step, number one. Number two, as Deb is mentioning, I’m doing and I’m still bloated. So now, we need to look further at the emotional side of this.
Kimberly: What is bloating? Bloating is something is not passing through your body. So, it stays and, as I mentioned, it starts to create havoc. It starts to release gases. It starts to create digestive distress. Bloating though can also be an energetic emotional energy. Bloating means I’m holding onto guilt and shame. I’m replaying a situation a billion times. I’m beating myself up. I am thinking, oh, you’re so bad. You’re so this and that. You’re so weak. Why did you eat that? Why did you do that? Why did you say that? When we hold on to beating ourselves up, it’s a very negative, detrimental pattern of drama and just self attack.
Kimberly: And what that does in our body, it does have a very visceral effect on our nervous system, on our adrenals, on our blood, on our circulation, on stress hormones being released like cortisol. It’s very stressful when we’re beating ourselves up. It doesn’t feel good. Our sympathetic nervous system can go into overdrive. We can be in fight or flight. We can start to feel very agitated. And this, in turn, shuts down digestion. This takes the energy out and the blood flow out of our GI tract and puts it into these other aspects of our endocrine system, our glands, our hormones are out of whack. Our body is like, oh my God, a crisis is happening. We don’t register it as a crisis because we’re like, oh, we’re not in physical danger. But, guess what? Just by virtue of attacking ourself in this way, it is a stress on our body no doubt. It is a stress that is felt, that is registered, that takes us out of digestion, and again, puts us into bloating.
Kimberly: So, we need to learn to quell drama in our life. We need to let go of patterns and shame and use something like the Stumbling Block Detox and the letting go technique, which I do talk about in recipes for Your Perfectly Imperfect Life, Deb. So, I encourage you to go back, to introspect. The book also pairs very specific foods and recipes with letting go of bloating and feeling more anchored emotionally. So, for instance, if we’re going through a lot of change, you may need some root vegetables like sweet potatoes. You may want to boost your circulation and have spices like cumin and turmeric to help cleanse and help reset your system.
Kimberly: So, there’s a lot of foods and practical information in that book as well. But as I mentioned, really understanding that we can work on food and get to a certain level and have progress with our bloating, but the emotional part is huge with bloating because it is affecting our hormones, our body, our nervous system beyond food. And, until we really acknowledge that, then we can’t really benefit from it as well.
Katelyn: Yeah. Thank you for sharing this viewpoint because, for some people, and for me before hearing it from you, I never heard of it, right? Like it’s just not something that’s talked about in a mainstream way. It’s always like, it’s just what you eat, or it’s just what you take into the body opposed to really looking at it in a bigger way. So, if this is new to you, beauties, definitely be sure to checkout the new book. And we also have resources over on mysolluna.com. Kim does vlogs every week and we offer articles and tons of information. So, if this is blowing your mind, we don’t have time to really hammer in more specifically on this question. But definitely we have a lot of resources that you can read more and get more information.
Kimberly: Awesome, Kay. Thank you so much.
Question 2: Is it possible that you’re subconsciously craving fatty foods and how can you stop these impulses?
Katelyn: Of course. Okay, so Autumn from Bend, Oregon is asking, is it possible that I’m subconsciously craving fatty foods? I consciously work on eating healthy foods and make sure I’m being active and meditating, but I still get these impulses to devour a whole bag of potato chips, and then I end up really bloated. Do you have any advice on how to stop these impulses?
Kimberly: Autumn, thank you so much for your question. I think that this is a big one. Cravings, fatty foods, sugar, the foods that are making us bloated are related to cravings because of course the foods are, but why are we craving the foods? If we take a step back, that’s really important to understand.
Kimberly: My third book, which is called Beauty Detox Power, took a deep dive on this. And again, whatever I’m writing about is something I’m really trying to heal, figure out in myself as someone that has had crazy chip cravings, and pretzel cravings, and crunchy cravings my whole life. It was giving me something. It was helping me release tension.
Kimberly: So, as I write about in that book with the top nine cravings, fatty foods is very stabilizing. Fat is stabilizing. Fat is twice the caloric amount of protein or carbs per gram. It’s very, very dense. So, when we have fatty food, it grounds us in our body. It grounds us through whirlwinds, and stressful times, and times where we feel like so much is out of our control. Fat is stabilizing. There’s fat in the myelin sheets that line our nervous system. Fat feels protective. So, it’s very, very common to actually crave fatty foods. Sometimes people say, oh, it’s the sugar, but when they’re craving ice cream, there’s that fatty component as well. Potato chips with that oil, that fat is actually very, very grounding.
Kimberly: So, I will say that it’s about looking into what is feeling unstable in your life and how do we ground that? So, I love that you’re meditating. You might want to also incorporate journaling and feeling what’s come up that day earlier in that moment when you are craving the fatty foods. Is it feeling out of control at work? Is it feeling out of control with your relationships? There could be conversations that need to be had, steps that need to be taken, organizing your work schedule, or perhaps getting out of a toxic relationship, or being more proactive and seeking more friendships through a center, or a class, or a yoga studio, or something where you’re more in alignment with like minded people.
Kimberly: So, I think it’s really important to realize that fat has so much about stability. And we can feel stable within ourselves. We can feel stable without food. We’re meant to. We’re meant to feel stable and grounded when we connect with ourselves, when we are in community. Here the Solluna Circle could be really helpful as well, Autumn, just because it gives that community where we can bounce things off each other, and hold space for each other, and have space held for us.
Kimberly: So, I think it’s really important to dive deeper. If you want to have more information, check out Beauty Detox Power. There’s a whole, big part of the book is about these cravings. But, in the meantime, keeping a healthy fatty food around like avocados, making some beauty open face beauty avocado sandwich, piece of gluten free bread, or even just some almond butter on some celery sticks, chia seed pudding, keeping healthy fats around because it’s not an immediate fix. You may want fatty foods when you’re feeling unstable for a while. I still had chips for a while. But I started paring it down. I started adding in crunchy veggies instead. So, there’s a transition moment, but really understanding the root of the cravings is fundamental as well.
Katelyn: Little light bulbs were going off in my head when you were talking because, when I get stressed or feel unstable, I’ll eat a lot of nuts. And that heaviness from the nuts… I didn’t really even put two and two together that it would be stabilizing. So, that’s really interesting to kind of… thinking about the why, I think, can help people be motivated to make those changes because we’re more conscious of why we’re doing something.
Kimberly: Beautiful. Exactly. It’s all related. And the more we introspect and open up like layers of an onion that are just peeling open and open, the more we understand more about ourselves and can connect on a much deeper level.
Katelyn: 100%. Okay, Beauties, we are going to let Kimberly take a short break here and then she’ll be back to answer the last two questions.
Break
Kimberly: All right, Beauties, we are back from our little break. We have two more questions for you guys all around bloating and looking at it from all angles, from all perspectives and uncovering the mystique, the mystery, the annoyance, the frustration about why bloating can creep in. It’s not just about giving up one food or another. It’s a really multifaceted subject matter.
Question 3: Is it healthy for my emotional and spiritual wellbeing to do a cleanse every few months? If yes, where do you suggest I begin?
Katelyn: Yes. And I think Beth’s question from Anderson, South Carolina, will dig into another layer of that onion. And she’s asking, is it healthy for my emotional and spiritual wellbeing to do a cleanse every few months? If yes, where do you suggest I begin?
Kimberly: So Beth, I think this is a really wonderful question. Thank you for bringing it up. I think that… here’s my perspective of cleansing and I’ve always shared this. I think ongoing cleansing is essential to energy, beauty, wellness, vitality, feeling good. We do a little bit every single day to benefit our body and we get huge dividends.
Kimberly: So, every day our body is already detoxing. We’re letting out toxins through our skin, through our lungs, through the breath, through our colon, through our bowels, through our kidneys, through our urine. It’s always coming out of us, but we also live in a toxic world. We also don’t eat perfectly. We also have a lot of chemicals, and products, and air pollution.
Kimberly: So, every day ongoing cleansing, as I spoke about earlier, especially through detoxy and releasing more, I think, is the way to go. I take detoxy three to five times a week, every day when I’m traveling, just for that ongoing maintenance. And it’s often these small little steps that make the biggest difference versus being extreme and just doing something once in a while. I think periodically doing some kind of juice and smoothie cleanse… we used to offer some at my other juice bar, GLOW BIO. Now we have our juice bar at the Four Seasons, by the way, if you’re in L.A., come visit us. And we do have programs especially associated with a spa.
Kimberly: But I don’t necessarily think it needs to be scheduled like every few months I have to do this hardcore cleanse. If you are doing the ongoing cleansing along the way as I do. Sometimes you may feel intuitively, all right, I’m going to do a cleanse, like a more serious cleanse to release. I’ve been going through something. I ate really heavy all winter. I want to do four days here, whatever it is. So that may come. But, again, I think the ongoing cleansing is really where I am at in my perspective. That’s where the difference is to be made.
Kimberly: So, make sure you’re taking detoxy. Make sure you’re drinking hot water with lemon every day. As I mentioned, the other supplements, we don’t have a lot of supplements. We only have three, but they really work and they really make a difference. The SBO probiotics and digestive enzymes as well are part of that more effectiveness in breaking down food and getting the waste out, which is really ongoing cleansing. And, again, it really helps with ongoing bloating to break that pattern and to cleanse your system, and to cleanse your body to create space to allow more flow, which is really the root cause of getting past bloating is allowing more space and flow.
Katelyn: I think a lot of people, myself included in the past, look at cleansing as an immediate because they’re desperate, right? I mean, they’re constipated, or I feel so bloated, or gained weight, one or the other, and they look at cleansing as this quick fix of something versus our methodology here at Solluna of that ongoing cleansing is really just a different approach and not like a quick fix.
Kimberly: Yes.
Katelyn: And [crosstalk 00:18:45]. Oh, sorry, Kay.
Kimberly: It’s okay.
Katelyn: But what I was going to say was, for you guys, since you’re listening to the podcast, we’re talking about the supplements a lot. And, if you haven’t tried them, we want to offer you 10% off. We have a code podcastten, T-E-N. And you can use that today to try out any of our supplements. If you haven’t tried them before, it cuts that barrier of entry a little bit. Want to give you a special offer for being our podcast listeners today.
Kimberly: Awesome, Kay. Thank you so much. That’s a really great offer to take advantage of beauty. If you haven’t yet, try it out, check it out. I think you are going to be very happy. It’s a wonderful, wonderful gift to give to yourself.
Question 4: Do you have any quick tips for those of us who don’t really want to focus on the uncomfortable feeling of letting go of say, emotional baggage that may cause bloating?
Katelyn: Yes. So, we’ll go into the last question around bloating today from Julie, who is living in Quebec, Canada. And she asks, do you have any quick tips for those of us who don’t really want to focus on the uncomfortable feeling of letting go of say, emotional baggage that may cause bloating?
Kimberly: Julie, thank you so much for your question. This hits into the heart of why we have emotional baggage in the first place, which is we don’t want to focus on the feelings. We are taught subconsciously or consciously by society, you don’t have to deal. We have a million ways to distract. Go to happy hour, have a beer or glass of wine after work. Pick up the phone, call your friend. Go on Snapchat. Go on Instagram. Watch something on YouTube. Turn on the TV when you get home. There’s a million ways to not feel the uncomfortable feelings. And, unfortunately, I believe the only way out is through.
Kimberly: So, here’s the thing, it doesn’t mean that you have to replay and feel uncomfortable indefinitely. In fact, Dr. David Hawkins who talks about this letting go technique says we don’t have to go into talk therapy and process and replay things that have happened to us over, and over, and over again. We don’t have to regurgitate everything. It’s more about being in the now and being okay with having these fleeting so called negative feelings, which usually last an intensity, he says, of to about ten minutes.
Kimberly: So, we don’t have to process. We don’t have to get into our head and like go into things that make us feel really sad. Or I don’t think about the details of my mom’s hospital journey, and feeling really alone, and crying in the bathroom, and every detail every day. But I know, when grief comes up, I get out of my head. I feel it in my body. And it does pass. And I know that if I don’t do that and I push it down, it comes up later on. The next day, it feels usually stronger and worse and I feel off, I feel sad, I feel depleted. And I know it’s because I’m not letting myself feel my feelings.
Kimberly: So, I just want to say, Julie, remember we’re talking about the now. We’re not talking about endless replay and rehashing. So, I hope that makes you feel better. The more we do this, the less stickiness there is inside of us, just like the sludge we talk about in the Beauty Detox Solution, the physical sludge. There is an end to the well, there is the bottom. And things will still trigger us in the moment, but the more we start to process and let go, there isn’t as much residual stuff that compounds.
Kimberly: So, you know when someone says something and it’s usually innocuous and not a big deal, but we get really thrown off and we’re like, what do you mean? Do you think I look fat? Do you think I’m stupid? It’s not really what that person’s comment is. It’s because there’s so much inside of there that we haven’t dealt with.
Kimberly: So, I will say, Julie, just every time you’re triggered, every time something comes up, just try not to speak right away. Just breathe and feel. Take a bathroom break. Take a water break. Just feel, get out of your head. Get out of the thoughts. And this will start to clear. Michael Singer talks about this and The Untethered Soul, another great book. He’s like the rose thorns are coming out of you. It’s starting to come out. The pain is coming out, the more we let ourselves feel and we don’t keep pushing it down and protecting it, protecting this pain, which is distraction. It’s food cravings. It’s just not dealing fully.
Kimberly: So, I will say, I know you have it in you, Julie, to be strong. You are courageous. You are amazing. You’re writing this question because a part of you is like, this is coming up and I probably do have to deal. But I would like to know if I don’t. So, I’m here to say, Julie, that it may feel uncomfortable temporarily, but the long term benefits of just being present, feeling your feelings, letting them pass through, will give you show much power. It will set you free. And you will go forward feeling so much lighter. And this, of course, will affect your bloating. You will be less and less bloated over time.
Thought of the Week
Katelyn: I want to thank you, Kay, for these tips, and insights, and just a different viewpoint around bloating, a different way to think about it. So, thank you for bringing this up. Before we let you go, as always, I’m just wondering if you have a thought of the week.
Kimberly: Yes. I do have our thought of the week. This comes from our amazing yoga guru master Paramahansa Yogananda. He writes, the season of failure is the best time for sowing the seeds of success. So, I wanted to bring this up at the end of the show because, if you felt frustrated, like you’ve tried everything to better your bloating, to better your body and you’re like, this sucks. Nothing is working. I’ve failed time and time again. I’m still getting bloated. I don’t feel good about this. I want you to know that this is the best time for actually creating success. This is the best time for opening up your mind when you’re down on your knees and you’re like, nothing is working and being open to these new ideas, as Kay mentioned. Being open to the idea that, hey, maybe I’ve never really thought about the impact on my mind on all of this, but let me give it a go. Let me spend some energy on this. Let me be open to this. This is where your greatest success can come.
Kimberly: I think everything happens for a reason. I’m so grateful and happy for you. I love you. I think you tuned into this show for a reason. Take a look. Dive deep. We have resources for you too. We have articles about this. We have our Solluna Circle, around five bucks. We have the new book, which is also super cheap on Amazon. It’s probably ten or 12 dollars or whatever. There’s a lot of tools and techniques and foods that can support you. This is your time for success. I am behind you a hundred percent. Kay and I, the whole Solluna family, we have a lot for you. We are a community. We’re not just here selling products. We are here to support you in all four of the cornerstones throughout your life. So… sorry, Kay, a little coughing.
Katelyn: No worries.
Kimberly: I just want to say how grateful I am again. Remember, we will be back here Monday for our interview podcast. Till then, take amazing care of yourself. We love you. Do something great for yourself today, whether it’s just taking a few breaths, kick off your shoes. It’s summer time, get in the grass, do a little grounding, do a little ritual, breathe, set some intentions. We love you. Again, we’ve got our daily inspiration over on Instagram @_KimberlySnyder. And we will see you back here in just a few days. Lots and lots of love.
