Hi Beauties,
Welcome back to our vlog series on skin. This is part three, and our particular topic today is How to Maintain Healthy Skin. Skin is something that we don’t just get to our ideal skin level. The maintenance part is because we are always going through cycles in our skin.
Our skin is constantly creating new cells. So, how we eat long term is going to impact the quality, the appearance of our skin. Of course, it also impacts our moods, our feelings, and our strength, in addition to many other things.
However, as we’re specifically talking about today, if we want beautiful skin, we really have to pay attention to what we’re eating. And this goes beyond calories and numbers like carbs and protein to the quality of the food, its nutrient density and its ability to digest well and nourish us.
Foods to Avoid to Maintain Healthy Skin
First I want to talk about a couple of things that we should avoid. It’s really important not just what we’re eating but what we’re not eating. This is the cleansing and detoxification part, which is cutting out things that can weigh us down and congest us.
Dairy
The first food that I want to talk about is dairy, which is very difficult for most all of us to digest. It can be very clogging in our bodies. And there are so many studies related to this.
You could look at any of my books, all five books have research and references to the link between dairy and digestive issues, IBS. Even acne, skin problems.
I urge you to do a little experiment with yourself. If you still love dairy, try going two weeks just cutting it out and see what happens to the glow in your skin and just the overall quality.
Meat
I also think that it’s important to reduce foods that are going to weigh down our system in general. If you’re eating meat, really cutting way back. Maybe 10 to 15% of your diet. This is to really boost the functioning of your liver and your kidneys, which have a big burden on them from digesting meat.
These are our detoxifying organs, so the more we lighten up our diet, we can still get plenty of protein, plenty of healthy fats, and lots of other nutrients. We don’t necessarily have to get them from animal products. As this relates to our skin, most environmental toxins come in meat.
By reducing it or cutting it out, we’re going to reduce dioxin and a lot of environmental toxins which age us and weigh us down and are not great for our skin.
Skin Building Foods
All right, so that being said, let’s get into some of our top skin beauty foods.
Regenerate Collagen: Red Bell Peppers
Number one is red bell peppers. These red bell peppers are amazing for vitamin C. They help to regenerate collagen to keep our skin smooth and healthy. To really help with the elastin and the quality of our skin overall.
I love red bell peppers raw. I’ll eat them all cut them up and put them in salads. Or I put them in salsa. So, that’s something you might want to explore.
Hydrate: Coconut
Also, coconut. Coconut in all its forms. If you ever go to an island country, like the Philippines, which is where my mother is from, or Thailand or Hawaii, the indigenous people that have been eating coconut milk and coconut meat and coconut oil and drinking coconut water all tend to have really beautiful, hydrated skin.
Get on your coconut water to hydrate. It’s got all the different electrolytes. To have beautiful skin, we have to be fully hydrated. And also cook with coconut oil, which digests really well and can hold up and stay stable at high-temperature points.
Prevent Environmental Damage: Avocados
Avocados are another amazing fat. I have a small avocado tree. Right now it’s not producing anymore. But, I really got into little baby avocados and I have at least one a day.
This is just the richness of the monounsaturated fats. It also is high in glutamine, which helps to protect your skin from environmental damage and to prevent aging.
Protect Your Skin: Spinach
My next food is spinach, which if you are a GGS lover, you are going to hopefully be getting a lot of spinach. It has tons of vitamin A that protects your skin against damaging free radicals.
Balance Electrolytes: Celery
Celery is also in our GGS. Celery is a beautiful balance of electrolytes. It has a lot of potassium. It can help de-puff and the under-eye area and just keep our skin looking really refined and beautiful and smooth.
Grounding: Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes are amazing for many different reasons. They’re grounding, they’re earthy. They also have beta carotene, which converts to vitamin A, a very important skin nutrient to help with healthy skin turnover and communication.
Cleansed Skin: Sprouts
Next, I want to talk about sprouts. Sprouts are very important. They are bursting with life force. They’re like the baby little plants that have tons of enzymes and they’re not yet fully mature. They’re in this process of growing.
When you eat sprouts, you’re getting all that aliveness and that energy. These enzymes help to keep our bodies really clean and cleansed. Sprouts also have a lot of easily digestible protein and minerals and antioxidants.
Next time you’re making a wrap or having a soup or a salad, just put sprouts on top and you’re going to boost your, whatever food you’re eating, to be an amazing skin recovery food as well.
Vitamin-rich Skin Food: Cabbage
Cabbage is something I’ve been talking about for years. I love cabbage. It has vitamin A, C, E. It is humble. It’s inexpensive. I eat it weekly and enjoy it cooked, in a stir-fry or in my soup. Sometimes you could have a raw slaw if that agrees with your stomach.
You might want to take digestive enzymes first if you’re a little bit sensitive or you get gassy. But, cabbage is a wonderful vitamin-rich skin food as well. So I advise you to just keep it in your fridge, cut it up, and use it wherever you can.
Repairing Skin: Broccoli
Finally, we all know broccoli is great for us, but I just want to remind you it is also particularly a great skin food. It has tons of antioxidants, fiber, different phytonutrients. It has a lot of repairing qualities. Just so many different aspects of broccoli.
We like it over here steamed. That’s Bobby’s favorite way. I like it roasted. Just a wonderful, wonderful food. Lots of amino acids. Super strengthening. Great for your skin all around.
In Closing
Thank you so much, Beauty, for tuning in. I hope you incorporate more of these foods to maintain your beautiful, healthy skin. And I will see you back here next week. Take great care of yourself. Make your GGS. Do your morning routine. Sending you lots of love, and I will see you soon.
