Warming Foods in the Winter
It isn’t exactly a secret that soup is a wonderful way to keep warm. But do you know why its especially important to get heat from our food? Heat is actually a nutrient! It’s why we crave “hot” foods, especially during the cooler months.
Another way to turn up the heat is to add in spices to your dish! You may be familiar with some of the common warming spices like ginger, cinnamon, and cayenne. But there are a whole lot more varieties you should take note of during the winter. Spices like cardamom, garlic, horseradish root, turmeric, and curry are all warming!
Also, warming, which I’ve included Purple Potato Cabbage Soup recipe is one of my all-time favorites, freshly ground black pepper. Freshly ground black pepper comes with an array of health benefits that many people are unaware of. For example, it is rich in a plant compound called piperine, which happens to have potent antioxidant properties. Studies are also finding that piperine may help to fight off inflammation. And more and more diseases are linked to inflammation. Just make sure you are using freshly ground black pepper, so you are getting the freshest, fullest benefits!

Powerful Purple
There is a rule of thumb that I like to share with people. When you are looking around at fruits and vegetables, notice their colors. The deeper and richer the color, the more nutritious that item is. And each color in a fruit or vegetable represents different nutrients! Another way to remember this is to eat different colors from the rainbow!
Now purple produce might seem like a difficult color to cover in your diet. But let me tell you, there are a lot of hidden purple gems out there that taste absolutely delicious!
Antioxidant-Rich Potatoes
Let’s start with purple potatoes. Yes, if you can believe it, purple potatoes do exist! They have an amazing deep purple skin and interior flesh, which is our first indicator that they are high in nutrients. In fact, purple potatoes contain 4 times the amount of antioxidants than regular potatoes. Now that is significant!
Purple potatoes are great for boosting immunity and helping to reduce inflammation. This is in part thanks to their rich sources of the antioxidant anthocyanin. We know that certain foods are very inflammatory in our system and we want to avoid them. Inflammation can be systemic, affecting your organs and internal structures. Want to learn more about how to reduce inflammation in your life? Check out one of my earlier VLOGS, where I discuss many different factors that can help keep inflammation down as much as possible.
Not only are purple potatoes creamy and delicious, but also they have a slightly nutty taste that really ramps up this Purple Potato Cabbage Soup recipe. If you aren’t in the mood for soup but you still want to try out some purple potatoes, check out my Vegan Purple Potato Salad recipe. This is one is a crowd please and it is so much healthier than those mayo filled potato salads.
Whatever you do with your purple potatoes, is your choice. Just make sure you are seeking out organic potatoes. This way you can enjoy them with their skin on and reap all their health benefits. That’s right, potato skin provides extra fiber, vitamin C and potassium. Plus, potatoes often fall on the Environmental Working Group’s Dirty Dozen List. So even if you don’t want to keep the skin on I would always double-check the dirty dozen list and avoid those nasty pesticides as much as possible!
Beautifying Purple Cabbage
Want even more evidence of how powerful purple produce can be? Let’s talk about purple cabbage, also referred to as red cabbage. Sure you’ve seen this vibrant produce in the store, sitting right next to its sister, green cabbage. But did you know, purple cabbage actually has 6 to 8 times more vitamin C than green. That’s right Beauties! Talk about an immunity boost!
Eat purple cabbage for beautiful glowing skin too! It contains vitamins A, and D, which smooth lines and repair damaged tissues. Plus cabbage is a well-known source at reducing crow’s feet – those wrinkles that show up uninvited between your brows. In fact, crow’s feet can actually be an indication of high cortisol levels. This is because high cortisol can cause the skin to break down faster and wrinkles to appear. The adrenal gland is responsible for making cortisol. So to reduce those lines, try an eat more anti-inflammatory and vitamin A-, C- and E-rich foods.
One other way you can help prevent crow’s feet is to try out my Feel Good Skincare System. Its system delivers visible results at any age. Brighten, smooth, firm and even skin tone in four easy steps as you create glowing radiant skin with the perfect skincare regimen. Our plant-based, clean formulas are rich in skin-loving nutrients, protective antioxidants and most importantly, they produce results! The Solluna skincare philosophy is that you shouldn’t need a million products to look good, but the ones you do use should count. Have more beautiful, healthier-looking skin and feel good doing it.
More and more studies are pointing to signs that cabbage has the potential power to benefit our intestines too! This is in a huge part to its major nutrients, including glucosinolates and the anti-inflammatory isothiocyanates (or ITCs made from them), antioxidant polyphenols, and the amino acid-like substance called glutamine. Sounds like a mouth full, right?! All I really want you to remember here Beauty is that cabbage is powerful. And purple cabbage is even that much more! So don’t shy away from it the next time you see it in the store. Pick it up and bring it home for your next batch of Purple Potato Cabbage Soup.
I just absolutely love making this beautiful and delicious Purple Potato Cabbage Soup recipe. It’s hearty, and warming making that much better to enjoy during these winter months!
