Finding Your Passion and Living a Fulfilled Life [Episode #540]

[Podcast #540] Blog Graphic for Finding Your Passion and Living a Fulfilled Life with Kimberly Snyder.

This week’s topic is: Finding Your Passion and Living a Fulfilled Life

This is such an amazing topic to go into the New Year with. As we all know, 2020 was, in many ways, a year of introspection and evaluation. We were forced into quarantine and isolation. We were forced to really look at our lives and re-evaluate.

Now that we’ve created that space to think about what we want to fill back in, what we want our lives to be, what we want to create and what we want to feel like in this upcoming year, we have so much choice. We have so much power.

If any benefit came from 2020, it showed us how things don’t necessarily have to be the way that we think that they have to be. Things can radically change, and we have the power to radically change our lives and to create something that feels amazing to each and every single one of us.

Have you been wondering about this very topic? If you want to know the answer to this question and 3 more sent in by Beauties just like you, listen now to find out!

Kimberly: 00:00 Hey Beauties, and welcome back to our Thursday Q&A Community Show, where our topic today is Finding Your Passion and Living a Fulfilled Life. So this is such an amazing topic to go into the New Year with. We are still in that New Year mode and, as we all know, 2020 was, in many ways, I think a year of introspection and evaluation, whether we didn’t choose it, really, but we were forced into quarantine. We were forced into isolation. We were forced to really look at our lives and re-evaluate. So now here on the other side in 2021, it’s just a wonderful time to have that … now that we’ve created that space to think about what we want to fill back in, what we want our lives to be, what we want to create, what we want to feel like in this upcoming year, and we have so much choice. We have so much power. Again, if anything, any benefit came from 2020, it just showed us how things don’t necessarily have to be the way that we think that they have to be. Things can radically change, and we have the power to radically change our lives and to create something that feels amazing to each and every single one of us. So I’m very, very excited about this year.

Kimberly: 01:21 One thing I do want to mention at the top of the show is that we just launched our new Solluna app, and it is amazing, particularly our Solluna Circle Community inside of it, which is my chance to really interact with you on a daily basis. There’s daily tips. We’re doing a live circle every month, virtual circle, so please go check it out. It is wonderful. We have been working on it for a while, so go check it out over at mysolluna.com or in the App Store. You can just search Solluna by Kimberly Snyder as the app, and you can join us over there, and it is amazing. It is one of the things I’m most passionate about right now.

Kimberly: 02:02 Speaking about our topic, a quick reminder, while you’re over there online in cyberspace, please be sure to leave us a review on iTunes, which is a wonderful way to support the show. So I thank you so much in advance, and please also be sure to subscribe to our show. That way, you don’t miss out on any of these Q&A Community Shows, or Monday interviews, and solocasts.

Question 1: Can you share how you chose the path for Beauty Detox now, Solluna, and what you think the key is to finding your passion?

Kimberly: 02:27 All right, so all that being said, let’s get into our first question today. Our question comes from Monica in Florida. She writes, “Hi, Kimberly. Can you share how you chose the path for Beauty Detox now, Solluna, and what you think the key is to finding your passion?” So Monica is sending you a big hug over there in Florida, a state that I love very much. So I’ll share that, for me, the path really unfolded. It wasn’t something that I planned or thought about for years. This wasn’t something that … Some people know very clearly what they want to be when they grow up. I thought I might be a doctor, and then after working in a hospital, I realized it wasn’t my path. So really, for me, it was taking it step by step.

Kimberly: 03:15 When I was a junior in college, I studied abroad in Australia. I remember a big pivotal moment for me was that November when I went to Bali for the first time. I had been to Europe, I had been to different countries with my parents, but I had never been really out of the western world. I remember, even just leaving the airport, everything smelled different, things look different. There was all these little offerings and there was candles and things burning everywhere. I saw families piled onto motorbikes, and it was just so fascinating to me. It blew my heart open.

Kimberly: 03:54 So when the time came to graduate from college, I still didn’t really know what I wanted to do. I got a job to make money, but I knew that I needed to travel more. That was the one thing that really lit up my heart. When I started traveling and it took over three years, my trip was over three years long, I knew, I could just feel in my heart that something was going to come from the journey and it was something that I felt really connected to. It wasn’t something intellectual. It wasn’t something that I could quantify, but it was a feeling that just felt so … I was so sure of that one thing. So I went with that and I kept traveling and I kept traveling. Then when I finally ran out of money and things started to get a little dicey, I started to get a little bit reckless, I will admit. I just felt it was time to come home. I came home and, again, I was just taking it one step at a time.

Kimberly: 04:51 I was passionate about yoga at that point because I had learned about it in India, so I was meditating. I was doing Kriya Yoga, which is Paramahansa Yogananda’s techniques, meditation techniques, and I started to teach yoga. I went to a studio, and in that studio I started to learn more about food. Back then, the studio, the students were into raw food and I was fascinated by this. I also learned about food on the road. I started working for this doctor in the East Village, who also had a cafe and it just started to unfold. I was following what was lighting up my heart and then I started my free blog, and then everything just started growing and growing from there.

Kimberly: 05:37 So I guess what I would say, Monica, is to not worry about one huge overarching plan. Some people say you find the plan and then you work backwards. For me, if you don’t know yet what your big goal is, just to keep listening to your heart and to keep taking steps forward. Those steps might be to order a book and to read a book about something you’re interested in, to learn more about something, or to talk to someone in that field, or to explore, or to just simply spend some more time meditating. If you have no direction at all right now, your heart will start to guide you. Again, to me, passion isn’t something that you intellectualize. It’s not something that you think about in your head. It’s something that arises from your body. It’s something that arises from a deeper place in your mind.

Kimberly: 06:26 So you want to be sure that you’re creating a space to listen. So meditation and after meditation and journaling and doing things like all the introspection that comes from being in our circle, that we do practices every month. We talk about all these things on a daily basis. So we just start planting those seeds so that we can start to foster deeper awareness and deeper feelings about things. So I would say, yeah, create the space. Listen. Listen. Listen to yourself. Listen to your heart. Make sure that you’re meditating. We do have starter meditations over for you on the app and on our website, and just keep journaling, and keep taking those steps forward. That’s the way that your passions will start to arise. These seemingly small steps will start to grow and grow and grow, and eventually you will create a whole new direction and a whole new path or deepen into the path that you’re on. So thank you so much, Monica. Sending you lots of love.

Question 2: Since COVID, I feel like I’m stagnant in my creativity and not feeling great about myself. How do I get out of this emotional and mental rut?

Kimberly: 07:26 Our next question comes from Jess, who lives in New Hampshire. She writes, “Since COVID, I feel like I’m stagnant in my creativity and not feeling great about myself. How do I get out of this emotional and mental rut?” Jess, I think that, again, it’s these times of challenge that drive us deeper. Sometimes when we feel like we’re in a real rut and we feel really stuck, those are the times that come right before a big breakthrough. So it’s like that uncomfortable moment where we start to release, we start to evaluate, we start to go deeper, and then afterwards, on the other side, comes the light, comes the fresh air, comes the new passion and the new direction and the new vitality.

Kimberly: 08:11 So what I would say is to be okay with the now. When we fight the now, when we say, “Oh, I don’t like this. I don’t want to be here,” then we actually create resistance and we stay in that stuckness longer. So right now, what I want you to do is just breathe into this moment and be okay with what has been and what is right now. We can’t control, we can’t force, we can’t push something away that is now. So COVID has happened. Isolation has happened. 2020 has happened the way it is. So, first, we create harmony and peace right now in this moment. We breathe. We do a meditation. We find a way to just create more acceptance of the moment. From that place, then we start to expand. Then we can start to find our creativity again. Then we can start to grow again. But what I have found on my path is if I sit and say, “I don’t like this. I don’t want it to be like this,” then we create more pain and more resistance, whether it’s childbirth or whether it’s trying to, for so long, the creative process. Whatever it is, we struggle more if we don’t accept where we currently are. So we breathe, we stay here.

Kimberly: 09:37 Another thing, Jess, is to get outside. When we’re in a rut, one of the places that we can get deep, deep nourishment is from nature and from going into stillness, and going into the forest, or the park, or the beach, or wherever you have access to, and just taking some deep breaths and looking around and looking at the peace and the equanimity that is nature. I find that my daily walks give me so much space and so much inspiration. Ultimately, I find a lot of creative ideas when I’m just by myself and I’m not forcing anything, but I’m walking in the forest, and I’m breathing and I’m being by myself. So I would just … It’s funny because it’s not prescriptive. It’s not like I can say, “Okay, well, eat some parsley and do 10 minutes of yoga,” and dah, dah, dah, dah, dah. It’s more about finding that spaciousness within yourself where you don’t feel like you’re pushing yourself and you don’t feel like you’re prodding and beating yourself up and wishing things were a different way. But I find that deep creativity is born of peace and equanimity. When we’re in this place of openness and we feel receptive, that’s when the great ideas come in.

Kimberly: 10:49 So, first, don’t worry about the great ideas. Don’t worry about the creativity. It will come. But first I want you to just breathe and find some peace right here, right now. Go, just sit in the grass or look at a plant after and before your meditation, and just breathe and notice how the plant is just sitting and being. Watch some birds outside. Just find some real space away from doing, away from evaluating, away from the news, away from numbers, the scale, social media, all this stuff, and just give yourself that space and find the peace. Once you can find the piece then all that stagnation starts to loosen up and then you will start to feel more and more natural inspiration just start to come up and out of you.

Kimberly: 11:37 So let it unfold the way it’s meant to unfold. The less control we put on it, the more we can let it flow through us. At the same time, I would say to nourish yourself, to nourish your digestion. That always helps with stagnation. Make sure you’re drinking ginger tea, having some fresh turmeric in your diet, taking your SBO probiotics and your Detoxy. Take care of your body, but, at the same time, just allow for space. Get off electronics more and more. Allow space away from TV, away from social media, and just give yourself that real deep peace and then see what arises from that.

Break

Kimberly: 12:18 All right, Beauties, we’re going to take a short break and we’ll be right back with two more questions for you, guys, on this topic of finding your passion and living a fulfilled life.

Question 3: I often think of the differences between those who dream and others who are living their dream. I put myself in the category of dreamer and wish I knew how to get out of this comfort zone, or maybe it’s fear, and actually start creating and living my dream. Help. I feel so stagnant. Any tips on where to get started?

Kimberly: 12:30 All right, Beauties, we’re back from our break. The first question comes from Katie in Ohio and she writes, “I often think of the differences between those who dream and others who are living their dream. I put myself in the category of dreamer and wish I knew how to get out of this comfort zone, or maybe it’s fear, and actually start creating and living my dream. Help. I feel so stagnant. Any tips on where to get started.”

Kimberly: 12:55 Katie, thank you so much for your question. I, first of all, I applaud you for this question. I think that even by asking the question, it means that we’re ready to move forward. I’m sure a lot of us have the same question and it’s wonderful to dream and to give yourself the space to dream, but like you said, what can hold us back is taking that next step and the fear of failure, the fear of “I know, I don’t know what to do.” It can create a lot of paralysis. So what we start to do is we start to take small, tiny steps forward and it starts with the morning. It starts with something that’s not even related to your dream per se, but it starts with fortifying yourself. Think about fortifying, creating habits that fortify yourself, your environment, your space around you, so that you are in the strongest, most nourished place to keep moving forward, and it gives you the satisfaction of task completion. So you get that confidence, you get that strength to keep going forward.

Kimberly: 14:00 So the first thing I do in the morning is I meditate and I get centered. Then as I get out of bed, I love to make the bed right away. It just starts to feel okay, complete, and neat and buttoned up, and I’ve done something. It’s very hard for me to function in a mess. It’s very hard for me to not feel stagnant if I am in a messy space. So I really liked the bed made. It’s neat. It’s tucked in. I go into the bathroom, I wash my face. I do my skincare routine, all of that, tongue scraping. So I put myself in this position where I’m feeling like, boom, I’m taking care of myself. I’m completing tasks. I’ve done my morning routine. I go into the kitchen, making the hot water with lemon, making the GGS for the family, taking my SBO probiotics. All these things are fortifying you, and it’s very important that we get into a daily rhythm because successful people have successful rhythms and habits to their day.

Kimberly: 15:01 Yogananda says, “Methodize your life,” so we want to create practices and those practices will start to extend and expand and start to go into your dream and the steps you need to take, but you need to start creating it in your life all around. This is very powerful to understand. How we do one thing is how we do everything. So if you’re already taking care of your house, taking care of your body, taking care of your health, taking care of your digestion, eating on point, you’re doing your cornerstones, food, from a food perspective, body-wise, you have a rhythm for your movement practice. You have a movement, rhythm for your sleep. You’re taking your supplements. You’re taking your Detoxy or digestive enzymes before you eat, so on and so forth. You’re creating these rhythms and it becomes stronger, and energy builds in rhythms. So you’re starting to really, really build your energy and you’re starting to build your confidence.

Kimberly: 15:51 Then when it comes to your dreams, the first step that I want you to do is write them down. There are so much different studies, research. I’ve quoted one in Radical Beauty, another one in Beauty Detox Power. This idea of taking things out of your head and putting it on paper, writing it down with a pen or a pencil, is the first step into really creating your dreams and putting them into reality. If they stay in our head and we don’t even get them down on paper, there’s very little chance that we can start to move them forward. But what you can start to do is you put them in your journal, you write them down, and then you can start to break down those dreams into smaller steps.

Kimberly: 16:31 Maybe you need to take a class. Maybe you need to just buy a book online and read about the subject. Or, maybe you need to just start contemplating a business idea or a plan or product idea that you want to flush out, or a website and you can just start to write things down. The problem with … and I’m a fan of daydreaming and dreaming, I think that’s where things start, but they’re fleeting and they can leave and then you don’t really get to grasp them and build on them. So you want to keep writing things down and then you can start to see, “Okay, maybe I need to have this conversation or seek this person out or, again, read a book on this subject,” or whatever it is. But write it down. Create habits in your life across all four of the cornerstones. So food, body, emotional well-being, that’s part of that writing, part of that journaling. Creating community. Maybe talking about your idea or just having an outlet with community around. I’ll mention the circle again, our Solluna Circle on our app, which is very powerful for this. We do share. We do support each other a lot.

Kimberly: 17:39 Then spiritually just having that space for stillness that I was talking about with Jess. Just to allow the space, allow your energies to start to grow from that place, creating a meditation routine. Meditation is one of the best ways to get past fear. Why? Because it connects us with our true self, which is beyond … I’ll paraphrase the Bhagavad Gita. It’s the soul cannot be withered. It cannot be dampened by water. It cannot be harmed by arrows. There is a deep part of you that is resilient and strong and completely infinite and powerful. So we want to connect in with that part of you, not the small part of you, not the ego that worries that other people are better or smarter, or that you’re not good enough, but the deeper, deeper essence of you. Then that becomes part of your daily rhythm and you start to build and you’d become stronger and stronger from there on in.

Kimberly: 18:37 So it’s very important that you make that space, Katie, and that you just start to write things down. That’s the first thing is, again, we don’t want to overwhelm you with all the different steps, but if you create the process, you create the rhythms, you create the habits and you start writing down, things are going to start to unfold and then we’ll keep talking about the steps that you take from there. But don’t get overwhelmed with 10 steps ahead. Just take care of this and I promise you, things will start to open up for you. Thank you so much for your question. I am here for you. Ask more questions as you get to the next step and we will keep supporting you.

Question 4: I’ve been writing in several journals over the past few years in hopes of writing my own book, but I tend to get in my head talking myself out of starting it. I know you’ve written several books, Kimberly. Can you share your process in starting, creating, and living your passion and how it made you feel once you completed it?

Kimberly: 19:14 All right, the next question comes from Giovanna who lives in Michigan. She writes, “I’ve been writing in several journals over the past few years in hopes of writing my own book, but I tend to get in my head talking myself out of starting it. I know you’ve written several books, Kimberly. Can you share your process in starting, creating, and living your passion and how it made you feel once you completed it?”

Kimberly: 19:40 So I will say, yes, I’m working on my sixth book right now and it has given me enormous, enormous satisfaction. For me, my motivation is about seeing the idea through, and always, always the idea of serving others and helping others. Money has never been my motivation. Of course, we all need to live. We all need to take care of our families. So, of course, we all need to make money. But, again, you know that question, “If you had a billion dollars, would you do anything differently?” I might get some new furniture as I’m sitting here on my couch, I need to get a new couch at some point. Some of the threads are getting a little loose here. Some things like that I might do all at once. But other than that, my day would be the same. I’d be here with you guys on the podcast. I’d be writing my book as usual, and I’d be running Solluna. I’d be doing what I’m doing, which I think is a real, real gift.

Kimberly: 20:41 So I think all the questions that we’ve talked about earlier Giovanna is really relevant here, this idea of following your heart and taking steps forward. I will say that, if you can think of the bigger picture, think of how your idea would help other people as I always did with starting the blog. That was such a huge motivation for me in keeping ongoing when I was tired or when I didn’t think that I had the energy, or I didn’t think that I was enough. I just thought, “Well, what if one person is helped by this? What if someone will benefit from this?” and then it becomes an idea that’s much bigger than you and that will give you the motivation, that will give you the impetus to keep going and to keep striving and to keep moving forward. Because we can often do more. We can dig in and find the energy to help other people even though we don’t have the energy for ourselves.

Kimberly: 21:38 So really just feel into your heart. Think about, imagine who could benefit from whatever project or whatever book that you’re looking to write. For me, that was the energy that kept me going night after night. My first book, the Beauty Detox Solution was my first book. It was definitely the hardest book for me to write in many ways. They’re all challenging. It’s really challenging now having two kids. But that one, the process was … I often start things, in the sixth book as well, I start and I write for a month and then I throw it all out. It’s like my warm up and then I start again. I was disorganized. I remember having a hard time finding different files and my notes and chapters, and the whole thing was … I look back and it was a mess. But I was learning as I went.

Kimberly: 22:29 The thing that kept me going again was this idea of helping other people and it was my will. I feel that we strengthen our willpower when we focus. So that means cutting out distractions, cutting out TV time, social media time. Go on it. Set times like I do. I batch my time. I go in there. I interact. I do all my comments. I post. I post when I have spanda, when I have inspiration, and then I get off. I feel that it takes real discipline to create your dreams as far as you’ve got to want it. You’ve got to stay focused. You’ve got to cut out the things that are taking you off the path. There’s nothing wrong with TV. There’s nothing wrong with social media or whatever it is that you like to do, but don’t let that take over. Don’t let it be this pattern where all you do every evening is watch TV or one glass of wine turns into two or three, and suddenly you’re tipsy every night and you’re not able to read or journal or meditate.

Kimberly: 23:33 Really, we have to be the managers of our own life. We have to be the managers of our own lifestyle. It is us that is responsible for carrying our dreams forward. No one’s going to sit over you and say, “Well, what did you do for your dream today?” We have to get real clear and that vision comes from what I was saying to Katie about writing things down. For me, that has also been a huge way that I have gotten my goals accomplished. I write them down. I revisit them. I’m not someone that just does resolutions or dreams January 1st, and then forgets about them. I’m someone that is constantly revisiting them every few weeks. I rewrite them. I look. I see what progress I’ve made.

Kimberly: 24:13 So introspection is important because if we don’t keep looking at our own dreams and our own goals, no one else is going to do it for us. So we want to just keep that going. We want to keep our goals. We want to stay clear, top of mind. Again, if we don’t have our goals yet, we want to just create space. We want to keep listening to our heart. Meditation is absolutely instrumental in this regard, cornerstone-wise. I will say, food-wise, clarity comes from plant-based eating, from not creating stagnation in our system. Ginger has been such a powerful food for me lately, all the ayurvedic spices. I’ve been having tons of cumin and turmeric. I feel that when we clear our blood, when we’re digesting, when we’re releasing, we are just opening up our body for more ideas to come in. So take your Detoxy, take your SBO Probiotics.

Kimberly: 25:06 I go for a walk every day. I get into nature. That also gives me space. My phone doesn’t work here in the mountains where I live when I leave the property, so I also don’t have any communication. Also, I think space from electronics gives us that openness. Journaling-wise, I journal every day. I write things down. It clarifies my ideas. It’s essential for my process. Then, again, I’ll say it, the meditation part for me is helping me tune in. So tune out of the noise. Tune out of the ego. The ego is the fear-based thoughts. The ego is the not enoughness. The ego is telling us that there’s lack, all of that. I just create that space. That has been my process for over 12 years now, since I got on this journey, really. This is the sixth book now in 10 years or nine years, nine years the Beauty Detox Solution came out in 2021, yeah … I’m sorry, 2011. Dates for me, I mean, I’m a little funny with time. I kind of don’t live in linear time.

Kimberly: 26:12 But, anyways, the reason I’ve been able to keep things going and keep the process flowing is because of just the habits, the things that I tell you, guys, time and time again, because they really do work. Systemize your life. Get out of your head. Connect in. Meditate. Then, from there, write down your ideas and then you will start to take steps forward. Listen to your heart. Get out of the ego. Get out of all the news. Get out of all the noise and find the space and you will be able to live your passions. Each and every single one of us has a purpose. We are here, we are alive because we have a purpose, and because we are meant to grow, we are meant to share with one another and help one another. So your heart will lead you. Your head will create doubt. Your head should be the master of your heart, I believe. So you anchor into your deepest passions and you create that clarity, your heart will lead you forward.

Thought of the Week

Kimberly: 27:11 So I love you guys very much. I love this topic, so please keep the questions coming. We’ll keep discussing it here on again on our circle. I’m here for you always. I love to hear your progress and I love to hear your process and we’ll keep sharing. There’s more I’ll say about this topic. We’ll just keep going deeper and deeper and I’ll keep sharing. So I want to leave you with a quote of the week, which is something I said earlier, and I just want to reiterate it again: “How you do one thing is how you do everything.” So if you want to live a life of passion, if you want to live your dreams, approach everything with that passion. Approach how you take care of your body, how you make your GGS, how you’re washing your vegetables, how you’re systemizing your day, how you’re really putting effort into your meditation. Everything affects everything else. Energy is energy.

Kimberly: 28:07 So just remember to bring passion into your daily life, and then passion cannot help but grow into your dreams, into your steps. It’s going to pour out of you. People will feel it energetically. More opportunities will come to you. People will start being attracted because passion is a light that is very attractive. So, again, if you want to live a passionate life, bring passion into all the daily little tasks, things you do, interactions, friendships, ways you take care of your kids, everything. Passion will grow. Passion is magnetic. So speaking of that, Bubby, is getting a little restless. I will get over to him. I send you so much love. I am so grateful for you. I will be back here Monday for our next interview podcast. We have a very interesting, amazing one coming up. I’ll give you a little teaser there next week. Till then, take great care. I send you lots of love. Can’t wait to hear how your passions continue to unfold in 2021, and I will see you back here soon.
