Interview with John Pisani on How to Flow with Life in Your Own Timelines
Kimberly : So all that being said, let’s get right into our interview today. We have John Pisani here with us. Hi, John.
John : 02:15 Hello. Good to be here again. After a long absence on the podcast, it’s great to be back. I’m really thrilled to do this with you today.
Kimberly : 02:24 So, we wanted to… There’s so many things we can talk about. We talk every day. I thought it would be fun to talk about being in the flow of life. We’ve been through so much. We met a long time ago. We started off when this was kimberlysnyder.net, when I had the free blog. And then, we started to create products into what Solluna is today. We’ve worked through the different book launches. We’ve been through so many personal ups and downs. When my mom passed away who you knew quite well, you were really there for me. And of course, very close to my children. You are their uncle.
Getting past timelines
Kimberly : 03:10 So again, I just look back on this journey and I think about flow. I think about how we grow personally and along the way. One of the big things for me that’s been a big learning and you’ve always been there for me, just keeping me grounded, is this idea around just getting past timelines and expectations. I think that a lot of us fall into that. I know I have personally or professionally as in, “Oh, at this point in my life, the business should be this big” or, “I should be making this much money” or, “I should have five kids by now” or, “I should be married by now” or, “I should have my second house by now” or whatever it is. And in today’s world, it’s really easy to look at what other people are doing because of social media and it’s put in our face. So what’s your perspective, John, about getting past timelines? Which, I think creates so much stress and just so much struggle. .
John : 04:30 I think for all of us, it’s so true. These timelines, we’re almost pre-programmed from childhood to think in terms of blocking out our entire lives of what we’re going to be, what we’re going to do, where are we going to be when we get older and kind of setting these standards to where, if we’re not this by this, we start to stress and feel like, “Oh, my gosh. I’m supposed to be here. I’m looking at other people and look what they’re doing. Why am I not doing?” It really prevents us from really being present in what we are doing and being, which I always now… I mean, listen, I struggled with it for a long time, but then I realize when I’m being present in what I’m doing, it starts to open up everything else to get you where you are supposed to be and you come to realize you are where you’re supposed to be in that moment. And really, when you start believing in that, it’s a powerful feeling that really opens your life up.
Dealing with the anxiety from social media
Kimberly : 05:33 I think that it’s difficult to go on social media if you’re at a vulnerable place or if you’re not really grounded, because it’s easy to look around and to see what everybody’s doing. I know what’s been healthy for me is just to batch my time on social media. I’m on there, I post, I answer comments, I look around, but I don’t let it trickle in all day. So for me, not having alerts is really healthy because I know if I’m working something out or if I’m in a moment of stress or just not feeling great, I know if I go on there, it makes me feel worse.
John : 06:16 Yeah. Social media is really a blessing and a curse. It’s great because you’re able to, in the healthiest way, connect with people and friends and see in a way that’s easier and share things and really can be inspiring. It can be used to really a great tool, but it’s a slippery slope because it’s just a human condition to look at the other people, what they’re doing and start to feel that stress of, “Wow, their life looks amazing. What am I doing?” Personally, I don’t personally do social media, but I’ve been on there.
Kimberly : 06:52 Yeah.
John : 06:52 And when I do go on there, I’m like, “Oh, my gosh. If I had to be on this every day, I would be a basket case.” Because as much as I could say, I’m evolved and strong, I go on there and I’m like, “Oh, my gosh. I feel like, ‘What am I doing?’ I’m so far behind in everything. I don’t have this, this and this.” For me, like, “Oh, I’d love to have a family one day.” And I look at other people and their kids like, “Ah.” You just feel this kind of left out.
Kimberly : 07:19 Yeah.
John : 07:19 Honestly, after, I feel depressed for a minute and like, “Gosh.” So I think I have to pull myself out of and say, “Okay. We’re not our social media.” And that’s the thing. I feel like when you look at that, it’s that feeling of, that’s their everyday life. And to extent, sometimes it is. Someone told me… I can’t remember who we were talking one day, but this person said we tend to look at social media and view it as through the eyes of our everyday, the mundane task of sometimes everyday life to other people’s like your highlights or lifetime highlights.
Kimberly : 07:57 Totally.
John : 07:58 And-
Kimberly : 07:58 Yeah, it’s the best moments that they save up for the week. Every day people are going through the range of emotions and the range of struggle. We just don’t see that.
John : 08:09 Absolutely. This is such a easy thing to fall into. I know, even when putting your social media, there’s a vulnerability to it because you’re putting yourself out there in a personal way. I know that’s a really daunting thing sometimes because it’s validation. It’s easy to fall into “Oh, I want people to like my posts and feel good” because it’s a slippery slope. You just have to really… And we talked about it, as far as be detached from the results of it. I think social media in the healthiest way, it’s something you have to post and that’s what you want to do. And just walk away from it and feel not be tied to results.
Being in the flow of life
Kimberly : 08:53 Well, and that ties in with our theme, which is being in the flow. And I am a very, as you know, a creative person, a Vata person, which means there’s a lot of air and there’s a lot of wind. I’ve always really gone with my heart. I feel like that is how I’ve flowed. The times where I overanalyze in my mind is where I feel that it doesn’t feel like it’s flowing anymore and trying to figure out, “Oh, maybe this is what other people are doing, so maybe we should do it this way or this way” versus listening to my heart. You’ve seen that evolve for me. Even in the books, I always wait for what feels like divine inspiration before I start writing a book. I’ve never unpolished in the past and be like, “Well, what do you think about this idea?”
Kimberly : 09:48 I remember after Beauty Detox Foods came out, they had this idea for doing a three day detox, which sounded like kind of a fad diet to me and I turned it down. I said, “No, I don’t really want to write something like that. It just didn’t speak to my heart.” So for me, it’s tuning in, which for me comes from meditation. That is where I get a lot of guidance. After I meditate, I journal. I write things down. I know that into your point about letting go over results, it always feels better to me to do something that feels aligned versus getting in my head. But it is hard because, again, back to looking around, comparing when things aren’t growing as fast or things aren’t picking up, you just think, “Oh, maybe I’m doing it wrong. Let me see what other people are doing.” and you start to doubt yourself. So I can say that, yes, the heart does lead us, but sometimes you doubt the heart.
John : 10:52 Oh, absolutely. It’s-
Kimberly : 10:53 Especially when things take longer than you want.
John : 10:56 That’s when I think also what that hits on is, intuition and trust within yourself and really believing in your intuition of what feels right. And then, you mentioned with your books, you’ve always led with, as an artist, you have to be inspired. And really, when you want to come from a place of true inspiration and true to yourself, you’re going to write about what you’re inspired about or else, it feels false. It doesn’t feel like you’re really serving your true self.
John : 11:24 And that can roll over to any profession or anything. When you’re doing something you’re really passionate and love and you’re doing from a place of, “This is what really inspires me and I want to do” it’s such a truer place and often leads to much more success. But I think it’s hard because you’re going out. Like you said, you have offers for different things and you really have to trust, “No, this is what feels right to me.” and trust that. That’s one of the hardest things in life to do, is to be present and trust in that intuition, because you really have to trust yourself. And that’s sometimes the hardest person to trust.
Kimberly : 12:01 I like how you used the word artist. And I remember the first time somebody really called me an artist is when we were doing a bunch of work for a while. I was working with Vince Vaughn and he said, “Oh,” he’s like, “Kim’s an artist in what she does.” And it struck me because I had never put that label on myself. But when I hear you say it now, I think we are all artists to the extent that we’re all co-creating our life, right? We’re co-creating with the flow of the universe, God, the divine, whatever word you want to use, but we are artists in that way, because you think about the choices we make, there is a flow.
Kimberly : 12:44 I’m rereading right now, this book called The Surrender Experiment, which is by Michael Singer. It’s about how his amazing life, how he just float along and just kept saying yes to everything that was coming up. It sounds extreme when you read the book. I’m not going to lie. But it makes you think about the ways that we resist the flow of life. If something feels, “Oh, that’s not what I wanted or what I thought, or my expectation.” we tend to resist it and to fight against it. And I think that is human nature to different degrees based on our personality. We’re so tied into our likes and our dislikes, and his book and also other people talk about letting go, like Dr. David Hawkins, who I talk about a lot. There’s a power to letting go of resistance, and to your point, trusting the flow and letting yourself go along, even though it’s not what you thought it might look like or how you thought it would turn out.
John : 13:48 No, absolutely. That’s a really great point and you’re right. I mean, when people say artists, typically you think about the typical things of writers, actors, it kind of move the arts to that arts, but when we take it out to a broader way, we’re all individually creating our own lives and we all have the ability to make choices. So everyone is an artist in their own life. So, every day, there’s millions of choices that you have to make. And to trust yourself in those choices and really come from a place of like, “This is how I feel inside.” It might be hard and it might not be the easiest thing to say to someone or interact in a way with somebody, but if I’m coming from my heart, I’m making this choice from the right place.
Kimberly : 14:35 Right. Exactly. I think about the resistance, meaning, when things come up, we have to tune into that trust because you have to be able to discern, “Do I fight or push? I’m going to move through this or maybe I go in a different direction.” And I can say thinking about Solluna, there was a moment where I was inspired a few years ago to come up with packaged food. Remember that?
John : 15:07 Yeah.
Kimberly : 15:07 We started to run into some resistance. This person we were working with, in that space just didn’t really work out. There was just some stuff. We were looking at co-packers. It just didn’t really come together. I remember just feeling like, “Oh, why is it so hard to create this? Other people are creating packaged foods and snacks.” And then, we kept going along and we kept tuning it and I kept tuning in. And then, I started to feel a very different direction than packaged foods. I started to really feel the call and the incredible power in the heart medicine of community, which is why we went in a different direction and started building our Solluna app and relaunching and building out this whole Solluna Circle Program. That feels so where we are, embracing community and coming together in oneness. And had we done the package food and gone in that direction, we wouldn’t have had the resources and the energy and the space to build the app that took us in this direction.
Struggling with change and how to overcome
Kimberly : 16:15 So again, what seemed like a big resistance and disappointment for me, just led us in the way that was flowing with our natural energy, and we don’t see that at the time. So this idea of surrendering and when disappointment comes, just taking a breath and going back into trust, instead of sit. It’s natural to feel disappointment for a time, but to not sit in that and to stay open because we don’t know what the bigger picture is.
John : 16:44 Oh, absolutely. Sometimes you need those experiences of going down a road and hitting a wall or a block and being open enough to realize like, “Okay. The universe is pushing me in a different direction for a reason. I’m trusting in that” because sometimes you can really get stuck on that block and just keep trying to power through it when really the universe is trying to tell you something else. And if you’re listening to it intuitively you say, “Okay.” and you make your changes. I think change is hard.
Kimberly : 17:16 Yeah.
John : 17:16 I know I’ve always struggled with change in the respect of, I have no problem making small task, like everyday task decisions, but when it comes to big, life personal decisions that carry a lot of weight and tend to be also in the personal realm, I would have monumental struggles of flipping back and forth and beating it to death to where you can’t even make a decision.
John : 17:41 So, the one thing I’ve really had to work on myself is, to really tune into myself and say, “What do I feel inside me?” and just make that decision and be okay with it. And knowing that I had struggled with always wanting to please everyone and saying, “Okay, this what feels good to me” and trust in that, not in a selfish way, but just in the say, “This is what feels right to me and I’m going to make this decision.” Because ultimately, if you’re making decisions to please other people, it’s going to come back around in a way within yourself of not feeling good and feeling resentment and causing a lot of other problems.
Kimberly : 18:22 Well, sometimes it’s hard, like you said, to make the changes. And I think about we flow along. For instance, you hire people, you build a team and then we have had to part ways, let go of people, change directions along the years, obviously, as any brand any company does. That’s hard. That’s the part that I really struggle with, but it becomes clear sometimes when someone isn’t in the flow, you grow in different directions or the energies or the priorities shift. And so, part of being in the flow though, is to be honest and authentic sometimes when shifts do have to happen.
John : 19:07 No, absolutely. And that’s not easy to do. But when you’re really honest with yourself, and I think if we all look back at times in our life, we look back after things that played out and you say, “Oh, you know what? I really felt that way before I made that decision, but I just wasn’t reeling to accept that yet and make that decision” because we kind of want things to work out a certain way and maybe that’s going against that path of wanting to work it out a certain way so we kind of resist, even though we know the right thing and the right decision and the right way we need to take our lives.
The power in leading with your heart and joy
Kimberly : 19:44 One of the biggest resistances for me is when I broke up with Bubby’s father. It was giving up any time with him because we’re so close and we’re always together. And now, he goes to his dad’s every other weekend, essentially. That was really hard for me in the beginning. But now, I look back. Now, he’s great. He bonds with him and he spends time. They have fun. It’s a safe play environment obviously. And now, I look back and I think, I do take on everything. I do want to do everything, but I don’t know that I could have written this book if I hadn’t also had besides nights and nap times and spare moments, if I didn’t have every other weekend to just crank. Because Moses is so young, it’s easier to work with him. He does still nap a lot. He’s just a little baby. He’ll be on my lap or he’ll just be right next to me. But with E, it’s full on. He really does give me a run for my money.
Kimberly : 20:51 So we just think about the flow and I think about how this book just really rose and feels channeled. It came from my heart and I do believe it is my greatest book. And so, it’s not that I don’t would not want to be around him, but this is the reality of the situation. It’s what life has presented. This is the flow. And in that flow, I’ve also been able to, again, write this book.
John : 21:15 No, totally. And I think this is a book that you’ve written from a place that you felt so strongly about, not just recently, for ever since I’ve known you. So this is like a life journey where it’s-
Kimberly : 21:31 It’s the guidebook.
John : 21:32 Yeah.
Kimberly : 21:32 The other ones were specific. This is my guide book for life, really.
John : 21:37 Yeah. I mean, it’s something you’ve been connected to for such a long time and live your daily life and that [inaudible 00:21:46] to what’s in the book. I think that’s powerful. And I think that’s why to me, I’ve seen the greatest joy that I’ve seen you since you were writing a book. I mean, you’ve really embodied it.
Kimberly : 21:59 Yep.
John : 21:59 And really, it’s a different experience. You’re so much happier throughout the process. Not that you were not unhappy, but anything you do, take on a task, it gets stressful, but you just… There’s no stress because I think it’s just coming from a place of pure joy when you’re writing from-
Kimberly : 22:15 Yes.
John : 22:16 It’s like anything. When you’re doing something from pure joy that you love to do, it’s not work. It’s something, “I can’t wait to do it again.” And I think this is a book that you’ve woken up every day and can’t wait to put pen to paper and crank it out.
Kimberly : 22:31 And one thing that’s really grown that I feel more flow in my life, and you know me for a long time, so you’re right there. Just the perfectionism that I’ve been trying to heal for years, the recovering perfectionist, the overly driven person. A lot of it has just softened so much as I opened more and more to this flow. And a big thing for me is really focusing on service. When we focus on truly helping other people and serving other people, we make decisions in a way that is for the greater good, and that automatically opens up the flow of life. I remember the very freeway I wrote the Beauty Detox solution, because I was a first time author and I didn’t have any preconceived ideas. I was just this… I almost felt like a baby back then, just so free and writing what I felt would really help people.
Kimberly : 23:33 That is the joy and expanded beyond that, that I felt in writing this book. And in between, of course I love all the books and everything that we’ve done. But as things grow and there’s more people that we’ve hired and all this stuff has happened, there’s been moments, as I mentioned, where I do get in my head and I’m like, “Oh, well maybe we should be doing it this way” or, “Oh my friend did it this way. This is the way.” It’s just overthinking versus that pureness of just focusing on what’s going to help others and surrendering. It sounds a little cliche, but I will say it is really powerful when you shift truly into coming from that place.
John : 24:16 Absolutely. And it’s funny. I don’t think it’s any coincidence. It’s our 10-year anniversary for that book just came-
Kimberly : 24:24 I know.
John : 24:24 … as you were writing this book. It’s almost a bookend of a decade of your life. You started that decade coming from a place like… I remember when I first met you and you had talked about nutrition. You had such passion. You just loved it so much. You came from such a place in your heart that at that time, you were just in love with it, right? And now, 10 years later, you’ve evolved throughout your life. And think of everything that’s happened in the last 10 years, it’s insane.
Kimberly : 24:54 It so is insane.
John : 24:56 I mean, it’s almost like three decades of stuff, but it’s in one decade.
Kimberly : 25:00 Totally.
John : 25:01 And now, you’re coming from the same place as you finished that decade, but you’ve evolved through that time and you’ve expanded out into tapping into what really was always there, but maybe the fear of putting that out there at that time, you weren’t ready. And now, you’re ready.
Kimberly : 25:22 I think too. When I look back over this past decade, there was a big chunk where I was working with celebrities and doing that sort of work. I loved them. I love the people. They were just clients to me. But I remember saying to you a lot, “Why is this happening? I don’t own a TV. I don’t watch TV or movies. Why am I in this? Why is my life like this?” Because I had never planned it. And now, what I realize is, instead of just questioning where we are in that moment, you said this earlier, John, we are where we’re meant to be. And I realized, I was working with celebrities and I spend a lot of time and interaction now with our community, which is everyday people like us and moms and all sorts of people. And I think that part of my journey was just to show the range. I was able to work with so many different kinds of people and bodies and learn a lot.
Kimberly : 26:24 So I remember just being at that point in my life and questioning a lot, just being like, “Why am I here? What’s going on?” And now, a decade since I started, I think it’s just more about gratitude and being present to where we are. You said this earlier, in just being here, instead of being like, “Well, positive or negative, why is this happening? Why am I here? What’s going on?” We’re not going to understand everything. So for me, being in the flow is just being where we are and really trying to make the best of it and to bring our energy and to bring our enthusiasm and to do the best where we are, wherever we happen to be.
John : 27:06 Totally. I think it brings up that fear content, that the fear in the equation of all this is what really is a big block. And it’s always, for me, been a big block of fear of so many different things, making a wrong decision, or where am I. It’s that fear of that, we’re not where we are supposed to be. And so, letting go of those fears and breaking through those and just being, is such a huge thing.
Kimberly : 27:34 Yeah, exactly. And I think it does go back to this deep sense of trust. And for me, that does strengthen and it gets developed the more that I spend time in stillness and meditation, and I connect to this part that is so much bigger than the everyday minutia. When we talk about our cornerstones, food, body, emotional, wellbeing and spiritual growth, the spiritual growth part has always been the biggest cornerstone for me, but now, I just talk about it more and more publicly because people have known me for food. Food is important, it’s energy as well, but there’s so many different aspects of us that we need to nurture. And for me, the spiritual part is just conducting with your essence, with your soul, with a part that can’t be compared. And that’s the part that is in its own individual journey in life.
Kimberly : 28:38 And when you connect to that, you start to trust more of the flow instead of looking to the side and say, “Well, what’s going on here? Oh, maybe I should be doing that and dah, dah, dah.” It becomes very confusing. It becomes very… just a lot of struggle in that. So, connecting in through meditation has been, again, my practice over the past decade, and it’s just deepened a million times.
John : 29:03 Absolutely. It’s a life changing. It really is when you connect into that, it does change your life. There’s a lot of out there now talking about that and the power of meditation, power of reflecting within yourself. When you first started, it’s a little… because you have to really be okay with looking within yourself and just settling yourself and being quiet because I think a lot of ways a lot of people were so used to so much stimuli in our lives. It’s constant. We’re on the go, we’re on these, computers. You know?
Kimberly : 29:38 Mm-hmm (affirmative).
John : 29:39 Your phone, texting this. We’re constantly being stimulated by interaction. And so, the thought of being quiet for 20 minutes, 30 minutes without any interruption, without anything, without even accessing your thoughts almost seems to some… When you think about it, “Oh, my gosh. A lot of people can. I can’t do that.” And I was the same way. I was like, my thoughts were racing constantly. You really have to work it. But when you get to that place, it’s like, “Oh, what a gift.” because you’re giving yourself just such a moment to just feel silent.
Kimberly : 30:21 Mm-hmm (affirmative).
John : 30:21 It sounds, you say, “Huh, how is it?” but when you do it, you’re like, “Oh, wow.” I feel that it’s almost like you’re giving yourself this beautiful nectar to drink of like, “Oh, I can rejuvenate.” And I feel okay. That’s what anchors and I think that really for me, the change has been by being able to do that, to trust myself so much more, because now, I can sit with myself and feel okay. That gives me that rooted into the ground to say, “No, I can handle these decisions. I can make these decisions.” Then, I know whatever plays out in the decision, it was my decision, and that feels good.
Kimberly : 31:01 Yeah. I think the reason it’s uncomfortable is because we are used to spending time in that stillness, and so, we don’t really know ourselves. But on the other side of that discomfort, if we can sit in it, is peace. It is a deeper connection. And from that connection does come that trust, that decision-making capability. So yeah, I mean, it’s powerful. You and I have been on a spiritual journey together. We do the same meditations. You also did the Beauty Detox Power Yoga DVD, which is amazing.
Kimberly : 31:34 Anyways, I hear little Moses has just woken up from his nap, speaking about the flow of life and being a working mom. I’m just so grateful that also the team and you have really given me the flexibility to be such a hands-on mom. People always ask me, “How do you do so much?” I shoot podcast around nap schedules and I do the writing when I can. We just make it work. And it’s amazing.
John : 32:05 Mm-hmm (affirmative).
Kimberly : 32:05 So, thank you so much, John, for all your wisdom, for being with me on the journey, for being with all these beauties on the journey. Whether you guys realize it or not, I wouldn’t be able to be doing what I’m doing today and to reach everybody without John. So, he has touched all of us, whether we realize it or not. Sometimes we don’t think about all the behind the scenes people, but they are as important as the in front of the scenes people.
Kimberly : 32:35 I will also mention, ladies, anybody out there, John is such an amazing, heart-centered just wonderful, wonderful human, just full of love. And he is… John’s probably going to kill me for saying this, but I can’t help but say he’s actually available ladies. He’s open to a relationship. So if anybody feels something or knows of someone that’s a lovely, lovely lady, please write into this show [inaudible 00:33:07].
John : 33:06 Oh, my goodness.
Kimberly : 33:08 Sorry, John. I know I’m embarrassing you. But hey, you never know. I met other Jon, hubby Jon, at a random dinner party. So you just never know when you’re going to meet somebody.
John : 33:23 That’s right. Well, it’s the lesson of the podcast. You trust in where we are and what’s going on and trust in the moment. So, just be open to anything.
Kimberly : 33:31 Exactly. Well, thank you so much for being here with us today.
John : 33:34 Well, thanks so much for having me and hopefully we get to do this again.
