This week’s topic is: Best Practices for Nurturing Yourself During Winter
This is an important topic because just as we bring out our winter scarves, jackets, and boots, we need to take that adjustment for seasonality across all different parts of our lives. We want to acknowledge that in the collective and the nature around us, there is more darkness, more coldness, more wind if you live in the Northern hemisphere like I do. This is a time where we want to adjust our diets, how we are approaching food in our lives, exercise, taking care of our bodies, our emotional wellbeing, and our mental health.
There are different times of the year where we naturally feel more outward, more extroverted. And there are times like winter as the darkness starts to come where we want to nurture this energy of going inward and planting seeds for the next year and the months to come. Putting our intention into this inward time in a very potent way, which can benefit us across our lives.
It’s sort of like going with the flow of nature. When we adjust seasonally, especially for winter versus just trying to do the same things day in and day out and completely ignoring what’s going on around us and outside of us. And of course, there’s always going to be more power when we connect and harmonize with the greater energies around us. This can be a really powerful wind tour for you. This is my hope for you for 2022 to become one of your best years. It’s important that we start to pay attention and make these adjustments now.

Kimberly: 00:01 Hi Beauties and welcome back to our Thursday Q&A podcast where our topic today is Best Practices for Nurturing Yourself During Winter. And this is a really important topic because just like how we bring out our winter scarves and jackets and boots, we need to take that adjustment for, for seasonality across all different parts of our lives. We want to acknowledge that in the collective and the nature around us, there is more darkness, more coldness, more wind if you live in the Northern hemisphere like I do. So this is a time where we want to adjust our diets, how we are approaching food, food in our lives, exercise, taking care of our bodies, taking care of even our emotional wellbeing and our mental health. There are different times of the year where we naturally feel more outward, more extroverted. And there are times like winter as the darkness starts to come where we want to nurture this energy of going inward and planting seeds for the next year and the months to come putting our intention into this inward time in very, uh, potent ways, which can benefit us across our lives.

Kimberly: 01:14 So it’s sort of like going with the way of things going with the flow of nature. When we adjust seasonally, especially for winter versus just, you know, trying to do the same things day in and day out and completely ignoring what’s going on around us and outside of us. And of course, there’s always gonna be more power when we connect when we harmonize with the greater energies around us. So this can be a really powerful wind tour for you. This is my hope for you and the 2022 becomes one of your best years. So it’s important that we start to pay attention and make these adjustments now. Best practices for nurturing yourself during winter.
Question #1 around the topic of: Best Practices for Winter: I tend to turn inwards when winter comes. How can I switch my mindset so I avoid turning into a recluse emotionally? :/
Kimberly: 04:58 And our first question comes from Beth, who lives in Massachusetts. Hi Beth. Thank you so much for submitting your question. I appreciate it so much so honored that you are in the community with us and you’re right. I tend to turn inwards when winter comes, how can I switch my mindset? So I avoid turning into a re loose emotionally. So I love this question, Beth. And this is, you know, I’m reading this now and I’m saying, this is the natural flow. My love. So going inward is part of this natural rhythm, this cycle that we all go through. It’s, you know, the cycle of the plants, where we plant the seeds underneath and it’s dark for a while. And they’re taking in the, that energy and nourishment and starting to open out of the seed into a little seedling, which then eventually starts to push through the ground and becomes a baby plant and then starts to mature and starts to access the sunlight through photosynthesis gains more and more energy and starts to become bigger and bigger and bigger.
Kimberly: 06:02 So <laugh>, so I share this with you because we need this more inward time in order to flourish as the weeks and the months continue to evolve and open up. If we are always <affirmative>, let’s say in the, in extroverted energy of summer, Ayurveda teaches us that we would actually, um, we would, we would blow out. We would, um, it’s like blowing a fuse constantly. We would just, um, burn out and we wouldn’t have the same vitality. So we need these different cycles of time to go in and nourish our energy. What I hear you saying though, is you don’t wanna be CLU. You don’t wanna feel so isolated. And so we can prevent feeling isolated by intentionally creating situations and events that feel really good and quality time and connect. Like let’s saying once a week, having a practice for inviting a friend or two over for dinner or meeting them out and you start to schedule that out.
Kimberly: 07:06 So that may feel like a really nourishing way to access your tribe and you know, the community. Um, I also encourage you to join the Sal Luna circle, where we have regular daily check-ins with our support group. And then once a month, a zoom call also very, um, supportive circle. Um, so that’s something that I definitely encourage you to look into as well. Um, and so all the ways in which we can start to be intentional when we want to create, and we want to go out, setting up walks, like I said, dinners with friends once a week, twice a week, whatever feels good to you. But beyond that, Beth, I encourage you to take advantage of this energy. That’s naturally pulling you inward and in the similar vein to schedule more time for sitting down with a journal, um, making yourself elixers and just having more time to be still and to connect with yourself and particularly with your true self.
Kimberly: 08:09 So maybe this is the time to go a little, a little bit longer in your meditations. You can try our practical enlightenment meditations, which are free on the app or other guided me. But just this time, this coziness, this being this less doing, this is not about being isolated. This is about self nurturing and getting to know yourself, and it can be really beautiful. It can be really, really, uh, powerful. So I definitely, uh, recommend that you, that you take a, and as you look through the schedule, again, there’s times to be with friends and to be with family. So you don’t feel like it’s too much, but there’s also so much potential here to go in to be more still, to be more silent and not to. I think we tend to feel like we’re wasting our time that we are going into a rut.
Kimberly: 08:58 If we use this inward time, just, you know, nonstop, TV, nonstop, Netflix, whatever it is. So being mindful that this inward time is not just Ving out and giving our attention to the screen, but really giving the attention to ourself. So again, practices, stretching, um, listening to mantras, chanting, journaling, stillness reflection, all of this is so powerful to do in winter. And I’ll say it one more time. If you’re looking for more guidance, more journaling prompts, daily support introspection. We have a, uh, F thought of the day that we put out in the Solluna Circle. I encourage you to, to join our community there, which is really, um, active and, and daily. And it’s really wonderful. So if that calls to you in any way, check it out over at mysolluna.com as well. So again, Beth, thank you so much for your question. I wish you a cozy, warm, wonderful week as we go into even more coldness and for you in Massachusetts, definitely more coldness. So keep in touch with me love and let me know how you do, um, sending you so much love.
Question #2 around the topic of: Best Practices for Winter: Hi Kimberly! I know you live in California where the weather is a bit warmer but on the days where it’s colder do you still go on walks? I’m trying but the cold goes right through my bones.
Kimberly: 10:07 All right. So our next question comes from Maryanne who lives in Europe? Hi, Kimberly you right in sending you so much love out there wherever whichever country you happen to be in Europe. Hi, Kimberly. I know you live in California where the weather is warmer, but on the days where it’s colder, do you still go on walks? I’m trying, but the goal, the cold goes right through my bones. So Maryanne, thank you so much for your question. So the answer is yes, I do go on walks. I bundle up, I wear multiple layers. Um, I do tend to run very cold. So a hat is always a must for me. I always like to protect my throat with a scarf. This is an concept that is parti particularly important for VA types. So if you tend to run thin, if you tend to, um, run cold, actually the wind outside can aggravate the, um, the wind inside the body, so to speak.
Kimberly: 11:04 So scarves are highly recommended this time of year. You know, it’s a good excuse to just stack up on some, maybe just one really cozy, lovely go-to scarf that you absolutely love my favorite or happens to be purple. So I have a purple scarf that I reach for more than anything else, more than any other scarf. So it’s just my, my little go-to here. So that’s what I do. Maryanne. I will encourage you though, if it’s cold to the point where you feel like it’s going into your bones and it’s not enjoyable, listen to that. And you may wanna take a few weeks off going for longer walks. I have been to the win. I have been to Europe in the winter. I’ve been to Germany for new year’s one year and it was just freezing and not enjoyable. And in that case, I would encourage you to try something indoors.
Kimberly: 11:57 Like <inaudible>, you know, yoga poses inside that you can do on your mat, which will not subject your body to this bone, chill and coldness, but instead will allow you to up your body and to stretch. And, you know, a lot of times in winter, we’re, we’re hunkered down with, with jackets and we’re sort of protecting, uh, you know, we’re hunched over. And so there’s this, you know, a lot of this heart closing physicality that we may feel whether we realize it or not in this position of sort of, you know, leaning over and doing it myself and my body and you can feel, you know, shivering leaning over. So the great thing about Austin in the winter are that they allow for this beautiful heart opening, which really does affect us on so many levels. It affects our backs and our spines. It’s really healthy for, um, particularly the, um, well, all parts of our, of our spine and vertebrae, um, doing twists, keeping that open, just energetically and emotionally and spiritually keeping the energy of this, a chakra, this heart based energy, just vibrant and open and not closed.
Kimberly: 13:10 We never wanna be closed hearted. So AANAs are real, really great, um, great practice Marion in the winter that I recommend as a alternative to walks that, um, that can just feel really nourishing and really great for you. So you can do self practice. There’s lots of different apps where you can, you know, do virtual yoga classes. We also have our Beauty Detox Power Yoga Series downloadable it’s download downloadable series now, which you can check out if you like that. So lots of different ways to move in sight. And of course there’s also indoor rowing. There is indoor bicycling. So those are other practices that I recommend, but yes, we have to adjust. And if it’s so cold that it’s windy and miserable and going in, please do not walk. Please take some time off because that’s not, that’s not gonna be great for your body as well.
Kimberly: 14:02 We always wanna listen to the inner wisdom to what is feeling right for us. And again, it’s not so simple as saying, well, I walk every day in and out rain shine. No, it doesn’t have to be that rigid way. Most stays. We can walk, but sometimes we change and we adjust because that just doesn’t feel so good to our bodies. So thank you so much Maryanne and sending you a warm, cozy hug out there to Europe.
Break
Kimberly: All right, let’s take a little break. And when we get back from the break, we will have two more questions for you guys on this topic of best practices for nurturing yourself during winter.
Kimberly: 14:50 All right, we are back from our break. I’m excited for the next two questions on this topic. Really focusing on how we best care for ourselves during winter. And we wanna shine a light on this at seasonal adjustment, which is really, really important to practice because it allows us to really stay at our are at our highest energy, which isn’t gonna be the same energy every season. It’s going to feel more inward during winter. It’s gonna feel more, more extroverted during summer, but we wanna keep going forward and not seeing one as better or worse. So we’re not in this holding pattern, this waiting for summer, we’re waiting for the warmth to come, but that we find real potentiality, real enjoyment in this now moment in winter, and we embrace the darkness. We embrace this inward time. We embrace the coziness instead of, you know, think about embracing versus spending X, you know, three, four months complaining about the cold, um, which just reinforces lack.
Kimberly: 15:59 It reinforces what’s not here. So of course we’re gonna comment sometimes on the weather that’s natural, but we want to surrender to the seasonality. We wanna harmonize with it and find the pot in it, which there always is. If we look.
Question #3 around the topic of: Best Practices for Winter: Can you share some of your favorite ways to practice self-care during this time of year? I’m always putting others first and then have little energy left over for myself. Would love to hear your suggestions!
Kimberly: 15:59: So our next question here comes from Aubrey, who lives in South Carolina. Hi Aubrey, thank you for being part of our community. My love, thank you for your question. And you write, can you share some of your favorite ways to practice self care during this time of year? I’m always putting others first and then have little energy left for myself. Would love to hear your suggestions. Yes, Aubrey. So number one, I love warm elixers and warm meals. So for me, day in and day out, I am making one pot at meals yesterday. We mixed it up a little bit. My favorite everyday awesome soup recipe, which is in the be, um, it’s in the perfectly imperfect, uh, Perfectly Imperfect book.
Kimberly: 17:05 Yes it is. So you can check it out there. I varied it by adding Pinto beans into the soup instead of lentils, you know, change it up. But it’s real simple yesterday, there was a lot of cabbage which Bubby loves. My older son really loves cabbage. So we mix it up a lot, but it’s, it’s really simple and it’s warming and the kids, everybody just loves to eat the soup. And so for me, that really feels like self care, really simple one pot meals. I also drink hot tea almost all day, and I just made myself, I’m recording this now in the morning. So I made some Ang tea with, um, loose leaf. Um, I have this little like Japanese teapot and I make it with like a, it’s got like a loose leaf strainer inside. And the ritual of actually making really nice tea for myself feels nice and it feels nourishing.
Kimberly: 18:00 So I like to do that. And then I have my special TEAC cups <laugh> that I like to use. And the whole thing just this ritual just feels is really wonderful to me. It’s simple, but it’s wonderful. I also really like taking baths in the winter and this is where I merge my caring for others, with caring for myself. So I feel a nice warm bath and I like to take it with my two kids. So the three of us fit in there sometimes how comes and then it’s a little crowded to in the bath with the four of us. But last night it was so much fun. My older son will put his goggles on and it feels like, you know, we’re just splashing around and having fun, but it just feels really grounding. I really love warm, warm water. And the bath time to me feels like an extra treat, not something we’re rushing through a checklist part of bedtime, but really a time where we are enjoying this cozy, warm water.
Kimberly: 18:58 And that feels really nice to me. Um, emotionally my self care involves a lot of stillness. I do not have a hard time. I mean, of course there’s a part of me. I do feel compassion. I do feel love, but I also don’t feel guilty about saying no. I actually just said no to a, like a weekend retreat that friends were doing because, you know, it’s just like a lot of driving and just didn’t feel like the right thing to do with so much going on. In stillness, I carve it out, you know, after bedtime, when my kids are asleep, my favorite things to do are to read and to journal and to reflect. And I find time for that more and more in my life. And in winter when there is less doing outside, just naturally happens because the days are shorter and I don’t know, it just feels like it’s just natural to have more stillness. And I, I just eat that up. Aubrey. I love it. I light a candle at night. Again. I like to make things feel special when I go into my reading and journaling time.
Kimberly: 20:13 And, um, yeah, that’s a, that’s a really powerful practice for me. And then spiritually going along here with the four cornerstones, I love to get really cozy in my meditations. I set things up with a blanket this time of year and my cushion, and again, lighting the candle and of a, all the times of year. This is the time where I really love to tune into that. You know, the darkness outside allows us in many ways that contrast to find the light inside. And so meditation for me in the winter is extra special. I mean, it’s special all year round, but just making a real ritual of it, a real ceremony of it celebrating this time for inward connection and connection to the true self feels great. So again, instead of bemoaning the fact that like, oh my God, there’s so much go, you know, there’s so much, um, noise.
Kimberly: 21:08 I feel like this is the time of the year because it’s so dark that a lot of people tend to turn on more media and get into social media more or, you know, regular media more. And that can feel depleting. So just watch your, um, watch your times in these mediums. Otherwise we don’t wanna get into TA energy or to start to feel slothful. So we wanna be intentional. You know, your favorite shows your time on social, whatever it is just carve out, but don’t go over that into hours more because then we start to feel like we’re dragging ourselves down. And again, this time is wonderful for connecting to the light inside and all our breathwork practices, our meditations, our journaling practices. There’s so much potency right now. And the number one thing, if anything, I want you to take away from this VO podcast is to embrace the potency of finding the inner light, connecting to the inner light as we go into winter. It’s a wonderful time of year to do that. So thank you so much. My love. Thank you, Aubrey, for your question. And again, thank you so much for being part of our community. I appreciate you so much.
Question #4 around the topic of: Best Practices for Winter: My skin gets so dry this time of year. I know you have your amazing skincare routine. Can you share your whole routine and perhaps a mask that you use as well?
Kimberly: 22:17 All right. And our last and final question comes here from Nadine who lives in Canada and she writes, my skin gets so dry this time of year. I know you have have your amazing skincare routine. Can you share your whole routine and perhaps a mask that you use as well? So Nadine, yes, it is natural for our skin to get dry this time of year, our skin, which is our largest organ will reflect, um, inner nourish. And it will also reflect, of course what’s going on in the elementals, in the nature around us. So the first thing that I want to recommend is extra hydration. Now it’s easier to hydrate in the summer when it’s hot and we’re sweating and we’re thirsty. So we have to put a little bit more intention into making. We are drinking enough. Water heaters may be running the wind.
Kimberly: 23:14 All of this actually is dehydrating. So if we’re starting to notice cracking dryness in our skin and our hair, first thing we wanna do is make sure that we are loading up with room, temperature, water, and also warm water in the form of elixir and teas and, um, you know, room, temperature, smoothies, and so on and so forth. It’s really critical that we stay fully hydrated this time of year in a similar vein. We also wanna make sure that we are eating enough beauty, fat this winter. So it’s a great time to increase your intake of coconut oil, coconut milk, and curries nuts. I eat a lot of nuts in the winter. I’m not gonna lie a natural. We just reach on them and snack on them since I’m snacking on them almost every day. Now, at this point I love pecans. They’re like my new, not my new, but my current favorite nut nut pecans and walnuts are up there at the top of my list.
Kimberly: 24:22 So more water and more healthy, whole food fats, avocados seeds, nuts, and so on as well as, um, coconut milk, wonderful coconut oil. Now what I actually put on topically on my skin, I do use our Solluna high performance non-toxic skin care products, which are amazing. I have to say. So really making sure that we are cleansing well enough. And sometimes in the winter, I like to use a wash cloth along with our Sal Luna cleanser, just which gives a little bit of extra exfoliation just to make sure you’re also removing all the makeup. If you wear any makeup, um, the eye cream, I apply two layers of it. The Feel Good. Solluna Eye Cream is fantastic. It’s actually one of my favorite products of all. And I layer that twice. I also put extra Vitamin C serum on my neck. I think our neck can get the shaft.
Kimberly: 25:25 Sometimes it gets the shorted end of the deal. It gets rubbed a lot with our clothing or scarves. It can get irritated. It’s also very thin. So it will show the signs of aging sort of like undereye skin. So I put extra vitamin C serum on my neck, and then sometimes if my skin is feeling dry, I will also put two layers of our Solluna feel good moisturizer, which is amazing. It has an alternative to a botanical alternative to retinol. It also has algae extract. It’s super moisturizing and nourishing. So I put that on sometimes two layers.
Kimberly: 26:06 Now, as far as a mask, I do like masks and I do apply masks. Um, sometimes from time to time, I also like exfoliating from time to time that that is part of my, of my program. For me. I love clay masks. They make my skin feel really soft. And I like that they’re pulling out toxins as well. I think by virtue of walking around in the world, um, I live in a pretty rural place, but sometimes I go into the city like you may as well. And then I feel the exhaust and the, you know, the air pollution and everything around. And so what I like about clay masks is that it does have this ability to help extract and pull from the pores. Some of these toxins that we definitely don’t want embedding into our skin, which can definitely wear down our skin and cause aging.
Kimberly: 27:01 So clay masks are a wonderful mask to introduce. I also like DIY masks from time to time, the Radical Beauty book did have some, uh, recipes at home using some, uh, wonderful moisturizing ingredients like coconut yogurt and avocado. And honey is fantastic for your skin. So Nadine, if you are one of those, um, one of our beauties that loves making your own little recipes, please check out some of those DIY mask recipes over in, um, radical beauty as well. But it overall remember from a, a cornerstone perspective, healthy fats, hydration, uh, using our, you know, wonderful Solluna skincare products, and then spiritually just being more connected to yourself and emotionally being more, um, you know, being able to process your emotions more means that you will be able to feel more, um, responsive, less reactive, and this will do wonders for your skin because every time we react every time there’s that inner rage, we can deplete our electrolytes.
Kimberly: 28:15 We can cause inflammation. So another important part of skin care net Dean is just doing our practices like meditation in the morning, so that we’re less us reactive. So we have less, you know, hormonal flux going on inside of us more equanimity, which actually does show up in our skin and everything is so interconnected that this is a real truth that we will experience more and more as we go along in this journey, as we follow the four cornerstones, more and more realize that everything is not isolated. If we wanna work on skin, we work on all of the cornerstones. Similarly to if we wanna work on our weight or if we wanna work on our energy, um, or whatever it is, we really want to work in this holistic way to get the best results, to feel our best, to show up and create our best lives. And also yes, as a happy offshoot to look our best as well. So thank you Nadine, for your question, sending you so much love wherever you happen to be.
Thought of the Week
Kimberly: I’m going to close our episode today with a quote of the week. And as I have been doing lately, this quote comes from the new book. You are more than you think you are practical enlightenment for everyday life.
Kimberly: 29:36 The secret of vitality therefore is to conserve the energy you have, and to bring new energy into the body by willpower Paramahansa Yogananda, let me read it one more time. “The secret of vitality, therefore, is to conserve the energy you have and to bring new energy into the body by willpower.” Paramahansa Yogananda. So when he’s talking about conserving the energy, it means that we are not fighting against the seasons. For example, what we’re using, you know, our topic here, what we’re using to, um, be the foundation of our discussion. We want to go with the flow, the way of things, the natural seasonality. So instead of fighting and thinking, well, I should be outside more. I should be more like doing all the stuff that I do in summer. We can serve energy by flowing with life, being more inward, doing our inward practices more than our external practices and winter.
Kimberly: 30:41 And there’s a lot more detail in this chapter. This comes from the chapter, chapter 12, you are a powerhouse. This is about raising your vitality levels and then using our willpower. And this is a whole specific practice that we’ll get into in the book, but how we actually channel more pro more life force into the body. As we’re talking about it here to today, in our discussion, we can channel more energy in, by again, working with the seasons, working with the elements, working with the four cornerstones and adjusting our food to be more warming, more nourishing for this time of year, our exercise, our body care practices, spending more time in, uh, <affirmative> processing more time and meditation. And by virtue of sitting in meditation and connecting inward to the true self, we are bringing more energy in, not just from food and sunlight, or sometimes we try to get energy externally from other people in the forms of validation, um, or compliments or things like that.
Kimberly: 31:47 It’s pretty arduous just trying to get, get, get from others. Instead, we realize that as we sit to meditate and we connect in and we focus on our spine and on our third eye, we activate different parts of our brain. We start to self-generate this power we’re, co-creating rather we’re co tapping into this power because it’s not from us. We’re part of this collective we’re part of this universal source energy. God is inside of us, as in all things, the universe, whatever word you wanna use. So we start to connect more and more to this inexhaustible source and we start to feel nourished and we don’t start to go into lack, oh, I wish it was summer. I wish it was spring. I wish this was there. I wish, you know, I had this as we find the light here right now in this moment, we fully enjoy and embrace this moment.
Kimberly: 32:37 And there’s so much freedom and expansion of energy when we approach life this way. So let this winter be the winter where we really start to, um, feel this flow of energy and ride this wave of energy versus, you know, the other way, the arduous way, that the way where we start to feel more and more tossed around when we’re wishing that things were different when we’re not fully harmonizing or accepting this moment, we have a very different experience. So let us open up to this flow. Let us open up to all the potential. Thank you so much for listening today.
