Question around the topic of: How to Stop Chronic Dehydration and its Negative Effects on The Body: Love the show! I live in a dry and arid city and wanted to ask you about Chronic Dehydration as my skin and face is always dry and dull and I tend to feel run down.
Kimberly: 04:01 Okay. All that being said, let’s get into our topic today about chronic dehydration and how we can get past these negative effects on your body. Our question comes from Lauren, who lives in Arizona. So thank you so much. My love for being part of our community. Thank you so much for submitting a question and sending you so much love. I was in Arizona actually a few months ago for the big crystal and gem show and visiting friends. So it is a state that I love very much as your question says, though, love the show. I live in a dry and aired city, and I wanted to ask you about chronic dehydration as my skin and my face is always dry and dull and I tend to feel run down. So yes, it’s quite apparent. Thank you so much, Lauren. Again, it’s quite apparent when we are in a dry place that, Hmm, there is some real dehydration at play here and now of course we’re coming into summer. So it can become more obvious that we’re thirsty, that we’re, our mouths are dry.
Kimberly: 04:59 Our urine is yellow, all these obvious signs. But I do wanna say that this is something we wanna pay attention to year round. And even if we don’t live in a place that’s, you know, literally dry and arid, we can be in a place where there are heaters going all the time. So it’s creating that indoor dehydration, or we can be in a place that’s very, um, humid and hot. You know, I go to Hawaii quite a bit and we’re in the ocean and we’re in the water and you’re sweating and you may not be aware of how much you’re perspiring and how dehydrated you can get. So the point is in any sort of environment, this is a really, really important topic. Now, as I mentioned at the top of the show, about 75% of Americans are estimated to be chronically dehydrated. And there’s some major issues that I wanna point out that this hydration can
Kimberly: 05:56 Can lead to dehydration can lead to. And the first one I wanna say is skin health, your skin will be forced to give up moisture. And this means that this moisture isn’t able to be used for other bodily functions. So when you’re noticing that your skin is dry, this is really the, you know, part of the philosophy of beauty inside out. And the beauty detox is that not only, it’s not just a cosmetic issue, it’s giving you a clue that something is imbalanced inside of your body. So our skin is our largest elimination organ. It does release toxins through the skin. Sweating is a healthy thing to do, but if we are, if we are dehydrated, it means that the skin is going to suffer. It’s going to be dry. It’s gonna be subjugated to different conditions, which take away from the health of the skin.
Kimberly: 06:56 Next is fatigue. Dehydration is said to be in certain research, the number one cause of midday fatigue. So think about that. We try to do so much to improve our sleep. And there’s all these biohacking devices now, including these cold mattresses and all sorts of things. And that’s all important of course, but something as simple as making sure that you’re drinking enough water can really give you the energy to feel good through the day, which is major. Ultimately, we wanna feel good. We wanna feel energized. So how amazing is that this potential solution is right here in front of us. Now, the next thing is heart health. And this one hits close to home because staying well, hydrated has been shown to reduce the risk of heart failure. And some years ago, my dad was, had an arrhythmia. He had some heart conditions and there was, you know, some care and there was physician visits and all sorts of things.
Kimberly: 08:01 But one of the things that really helped him was simply remaining more hydrated. And we started really boosting his water intake and it really made such a difference even in the functionality of the heart. This shows that such basic things like drinking water are critical to complex organs like our cardiovascular system and our heart functioning well, kidney health kidneys are such an important organ for vitality. Traditional Chinese medicine talks about the importance of kidneys to our overall life force and water is what helps the kidneys remove waste from the blood. So in that way, hydration is also related to the efficiency of detoxification, which of course is really important to maintaining our overall health and vitality. If our bodies are way down with heavy metals and toxicity, we don’t have the same optimal functionality. The next is healthy, weight maintenance. If we are drinking water, if we’re hydrated, some research shows that it can, it can increase your metabolism by up to 30%, which is amazing. Again, everything functions better when it’s well nourished when it’s well, hydrated water is one of the elements. One of the critical elements in, in the world in nature, the pan Maha BTU theory of Aveda inside of our bodies. It also helps to maintain our body temperature and our mood. It said that even a one to 2% water deficit can cause women to fall into a foul mood. Isn’t that interesting?
Kimberly: 09:55 So I will say as well, before we get into our very important tips here, that the average American still only drinks 1.8 cups of water a day. And it’s really important that we drink. I mean, the minimum recommendation is 8.5 cups, but what is said to be the, um, this is by the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, these approximate amounts, which I will, we will link to in the show notes is 15.5 cups of fluids a day for men and 11.5 cups of fluids a day for women. That’s quite a, you know, a, a lot more than we’ve been told in the past. But again, it’s important because of all the functionalities in the body that I just mentioned functioning at their peak, just from drinking more water. So here are some of my tips that I recommend you start to incorporate to really get your hydration at great levels.
Kimberly: 11:03 Number one is carry a water bottle with you so you can fill it and refill it and easily track how much you’re really drinking. I have my water bottle with me in the car when I’m driving my son to school, I have it with me on my daily walks. <laugh> I keep it around and it’s practical. I can grab and go, my baby, doesn’t knock it over. And it just makes it part of your life. It’s on my desk, it’s all around. So I encourage you to get a water bottle that you enjoy the colors minus stainless steel, whatever it is just to really again, make it part of your routine. Now, if you’re someone that thinks water is difficult to drink, it’s boring. And this is the category that my dad falls into. It’s nice
Kimberly: 11:52 To add some lemon to it, a little bit of flavor, some lime, just to make sure that you’re adding some more of that, that flavor into it. And that’s a really great way to, um, just to make sure that it keeps it fresh tasting to you. So you don’t dread it. You’re not taking these little micro mini sips, but you’re actually enjoying more of what you drink. Now, another thing is to make sure that you’re drinking other foods with high water content. So a great thing to do of course, is to start your day with our morning routine, which is room temperature, water, hot water with lemon and the glowing green smoothie. So you think about the hydration in just our morning practice, the glowing green smoothie, the base is water, and then you’re eating these very watery, vegetables, and fruit with high contents of water in them already. So that’s a great way to add to your hydration levels in a really efficient way, day by day.
Kimberly: 12:56 So by starting the day on a good note, and we talk about this from a meditation perspective, starting the day by sitting in meditation to get into that flow. And also starting in the day, uh, with again, room temperature, water, hot, whatever lemon GS you’re starting the day already more hydrated, you’re starting to get your metabolism running. And so how we start the day starts that beautiful flow. So I really encourage you to put more effort into getting all that water in, right when you wake up, when most all of us are at least a little bit chronically dehydrated, and next it’s important to cut the caffeine, which can be a diuretic. It’s okay to have, you know, a cup of coffee or some tea, but you don’t wanna really be drinking that all day long. It’s a great idea to, again, swap in some flavored water or even sparkling water or coconut water, there’s all these great alternatives now as well besides our standard room, temperature filtered water, which is definitely what I recommend.
Kimberly: 14:00 Oh, I definitely also recommend getting a, a filter for your home of some sort. So that, which I’ll talk about another show, just to make sure you’re drinking enough water and we don’t have all this waste and you don’t have to spend all this money on bottled water as well. And lastly, I’ll say it’s really important to monitor your urine throughout the day. All these bodily cues, all our body’s wisdom really does help point us in the direction of our own benefit. And if you just notice, Hey, my pee is quite yellow today, which my son will point out to me. He’s like, mama, look, look, and we say, oh wow, we really gotta drink more water today. You’re gonna feel better. So we just pay attention to what’s going on instead of sort of being on autopilot and moving through and not taking those cues. So it’s really simple.
Kimberly: 14:51 We want our urine to be as clear as possible. And when it’s off that clarity, that cl that clear, um, liquid look, you can physically see with your eyes. It’s just a cue to bump up the water intake. And so that way we keep coming back to balance. We keep coming back to optimal hydration and we keep filling our best. So all of this being said, please be sure to head over to our show notes over at mysolluna.com, which will give you lots of links to, to these these tips and, and beyond. So the research recipes, smoothies, and meditations and articles, and so much more before we sign off on our show today as well.
Thought of the Week
Kimberly: 14:51 I want to leave view with a quote of the week, which is on page 144 of the new book. You are more than you think you are. So this is about vitality from a yogic standpoint. Vitality is when the life force, or prana, flows through you in abundant quantities. You feel focused, resilient, strong, confident, inspired, and unstoppable. And so remember that as we spoke about today on the show, one of the ways in which you can really support your vitality and your body’s natural life force is to stay well hydrated. So thank you so much for tuning in. I’ll be back here Monday for our next interview podcast till then take great care and sending you so much love.
