I’m really passionate to share about this topic because I remember when I too was really fixated on all the numbers around food calorie, count, carbs, and so on. And then when I went to India for the first time, I really started to learn about food in a much broader and more expansive way and how everything really is energy at the core, including food.
And when we approach food in this way, it opens everything up. I really found that I started to understand how to work with that energy. I started to understand how to open up my digestion and get more energy from food and break free of the obsession with numbers.
Today we’re going to go into some of the teachings around the vedas and the energy of food. We’re going to talk about Sufi foods and Rassic foods and Tasic foods, the categories, the Gunas, and how we can learn how to discern the best diet for our bodies and what we can eat to feel really great.
And at the same time, when we eat from this energetic perspective, we create balance and harmony. And so it does become easier to maintain a healthy weight. It does become easier to get that vibrant glow and to have the looks that you want, and create it from an energetic standpoint, which is very, very powerful.

Solocast: The Energetic Effects Food Has On Your Body and How To Go Beyond Numbers
My personal journey in understanding food, numbers and calories
Kimberly: 04:59 All that being said, let’s get into our topic today, which is going beyond the numbers in food, and really starting to understand more and more about the energy of food. So I’ll share that. I didn’t know about this until I went backpacking. So I grew up with the same sort of understanding of food that I think most, all of us are taught, which is that food is a collection of numbers, calories in calories out. If you wanna lose weight, you wanna cut calories or, you know, various times different time periods. It was, you know, oh, cut the sugar, cut the carbs, cut the fat, whatever it was. It was always this very reductionist approach to food.
Kimberly: 05:57 And the problem with that is it allowed a lot of space for empty foods to come in foods that were processed microwaved, not fresh foods that were, um, not, not, you know, we weren’t, it was not about the quality. It was just almost like this game of adding together numbers and seeing how we could cut numbers away. And then what happened was I started to feel very uncomfortable in my body. I went from eating disorders to gaining weight through college, and then I started to explore more be on diets. And then I started to learn something about digestion, which started to open up my eyes. And then I went on this tremendous journey for over three years. And one of the countries that I was in was India. And I was struck by how there was this discussion of food, but it was from a very different standpoint. I, this is where I was visiting ashrams for the first time I was learning about yoga and meditation for the first time. And so every yoga teacher would really talk about diet. And the reason I learned was because what we eat has a profound effect on our mental state. So it affects our ability to be joyful and to be peaceful. And it affects how well we meditate.
Kimberly: 07:22 And so this really started to shift things for me. And that was actually the first reason, the first, um, actual experience. And when I decided to be, go to become fully plant based was for the energetic reasons, the health reasons, as I went into deeper down the road and the environmental reasons and so on and so forth would come later. But really first and foremost, it was about the energetic. So then I moved back to New York city after this, around the world trip. And I found myself immersed in this yoga studio and it actually became a big part of my life. I made a lot of friends there and at the time I dated someone from the studio and we would always hang out as a group and cook food together or uncooked food. This is a time where I was getting into raw food actually.
Kimberly: 08:14 And our teacher always, always talked about the importance of being vegetarian. And he talked about the violence. He talked about, um, a himsa, which is non-violence and eating plant-based foods. And he talked about what it was to put that in your body foods that were of a peaceful nature. And so I went from India out where I had heard a lot about this, and I was eating a lot of cooked Indian food to really living it in New York city where I was hands on. I was making it with all my Yogi friends. And then I started working at this cafe in the east village that was raw as well. And so I was learning and learning and starting to feel amazing and starting to feel really light and starting to see my body transform and open up. And I was doing yoga asanas at the time, very intensely.
Kimberly: 09:10 And I could see incredible changes in my spine and my back bends and my flexibility and my strength and everything just completely transformed. And I did start to feel deeper and deeper levels of peace. I still had some anxiety and insomnia and it would take years and years of course, for that to unravel, but I was seeing incredible, incredible shifts. And so I continued to go deeper into exploration and I continued to go deeper into my guru, Paramahansa Yogananda, who is the one who brought yoga to the west, who is prolific and has so many detailed writings and teachings for us. And so I’m gonna read some passages today, which are from his commentary of The Bhagavad Gita. So this is where this is really interesting. This is an ancient text of India, and it is a spiritual text, but there are whole sections around food and diet.
Kimberly: 10:13 So again, there isn’t a separation in this, in the yogic philosophy between what we eat and our spirituality, whereas, you know, having been raised Catholic myself there wasn’t, or at least where, you know, in, in my church there wasn’t so much of an emphasis on specific foods and teachings around the foods we had, of course, Easter celebration and Christmas and all of that. But there wasn’t such an emphasis on specifics. So I just, I find it really interesting that this holistic approach of the Vedas, these Vedic texts really covers all the energies. And if you think about it, we are energy. We are pulsating electrons and we’re dynamic beings, and our cells are constantly overturning and being created. And so it makes total sense to really pay attention to the energy of the food that we’re taking in. Einstein said, energy is neither created nor destroyed it transmutes, and it transforms.
Kimberly: 11:25 And so of course we want to really awaken to that truth. Food is not just a collection of numbers. We don’t get the same energy from a bag of Cheetos, as we do from a ripe avocado. It’s a very different quality. And so we wanna really hone in on this because once we do, and this is my, my, to pass this along to you, it can be truly life changing. And it really was for me. And I started to look at food in a very different way. And I started to understand my body more. And I started to just simplify things and a lot of confusion left, which was really good. And I just felt so much better. So this is, these are ancient teachings. And of course in the Ayurveda, which is the fourth of the Vedas, there is, it includes the knowledge of Ayurveda, which goes deep and deep into this whole concept of the una of the energies, but even in the Gita, which is a separate text, separate part of the Vedas, there is mention of the food qualities.
Kimberly: 12:43 So it was obviously considered to be very important by the ancient sages and Rishi’s the teachers of truth and yoga union, how to, how to create this deep connection to ourselves, to spirit inside of us, to the true self and to live our best lives, which essentially is what these teachings are about and essentially what the Gita is about. So I am reading now from the commentary, and this is, um, there’s a whole section here, um, verse seven and then eight through 10. There’s a lot of Sanskrit here. This is in chapter seven, 17. <laugh> because many, uh, verses here, uh, chapter yes, chapter 17.
Ancient wisdom paired with modern science on the energy of our food
Kimberly: 13:35 And so I’ll read some of the commentary again, there’s a lot of Sanskrit I’m just gonna sort of pick through and yoga underwrites. What we eat is important because it has both physical and mental consequences. The body cells are built from food. The mind is also affected by the guna quality inherent in all substances, modern scientists analyze the value of food stuffs according to their physical properties and how they react on the body. But yogis who anciently delved in the spiritual science of food consider its vibratory nature in determining what is beneficial, stimulating or harmful when ingested. So what I like about this as well is that there is alignment with modern science. As we’ll see, as we get into this, this is ancient wisdom paired with modern science, and there is this beautiful synergy. So in my books, I like to share about philosophy and spirituality, but I always do include research because what more and more is we see emerging emerging backing up of the what of Western science.
Sattvic food energy and their benefits
Kimberly: 14:58 We see that with things like Ric, getting, you know, all this Western science behind it and so on and so forth, you know, these ancient herbs from Ayurveda. So let’s get into this in some detail, the first class of food. Solluna is essentially a type of, um, energy, if you will. So Sattvic energy is harmonious. It’s centered, it’s calm, and it is, uh, deeply, uh, grounded. So when we eat Sattvic foods, it helps to promote this balance within our own bodies. And the commentary yoga said, Yogananda says about Sattvic foods, foods that promote longevity, vitality, endurance, health, cheerfulness, and good appetite, and that are savory, mild, substantial, and agreeable to the body are liked by pure minded Sattvic persons. So it goes both ways. If we’re wanting to be centered and harmonious and loving and all these beautiful qualities, calm, we wanna eat foods to support that.
Kimberly: 16:07 And then as we start to go along the path and those qualities build inside of us, we naturally start to create those foods. So in the beginning, and I’ll say these foods include all fruits and vegetables, whole grains seeds, nuts legumes. So yes, all the plant based foods. And so as we begin the journey, it can be a transition for some of us away from different kinds of foods. And it may feel a little bit more challenging in the beginning, but then we get to a certain point where a body starts to open up to this energy. And we start to really crave these foods because we just feel better being on them. Also, you’ll notice that these are the foods that contain fiber because only plant foods contain fiber. And what we know more and more about the emerging research on fiber is that it is incredibly beneficial to our gut microbiome, to our gut health.
Kimberly: 17:05 And this is essential for overall feelings of wellbeing, overall feelings of energy and balance in our system. When we eat fiber, it does many things. It gives us sustained energy. It helps with detoxification, but it also helps to feed the short chain fatty acid in the gut, reducing inflammation throughout the body, and just creating a beautiful balance through our systems, including even being connected with balanced hormones. So even though the yogis, we’re not talking specifically about hormones or the microbiome, they were insightful and so deeply intuitive to know that these foods were going to create balance. And so we think about balance today. We think about a balanced gut. We think about balanced moods, right? So all of that comes from these, these, these actual qualities in the food. So it’s the energy of these foods. And the energy then translates to actual physical elements like the fiber that we were just talking about.
Kimberly: 18:17 And also of course, all these fruits and vegetables are full of antioxidants and vitamins and minerals and tons and tons of phytonutrients. And these are what provide balanced health and harmony in your system. And so again, we can say energetically, this is what the yogis were teaching us. And it does cross over with modern science and that these are the, these are the foods that are the most nutrient dense. So the first Solluna is Sattvic foods. So this is everything that we really focus on in our beauty detox and our Solluna recipes and our diet, which we’ve been promoting now for over a decade is really having a predominantly plant-based diet and also simplifying the way that we eat, which is another quality of creating balance. So it’s easier to digest. There’s better flow to your digestion as well.
Rajasic foods and their qualities
Kimberly: 18:17 So then the next quality of foods next Solluna is known as Rajasic and Yogananda says foods that are bitter sour, saltish, excessively hot, pungent, harsh, and burning are preferred by Rajasic men and produce pain, sorrow, and disease.
Kimberly: 19:35 So <laugh> sounds a little harsh, but what he’s saying is that in excess SIC foods can create an excess of heat in the body of, of Pitta and make us overactive and restless. And so if we’re, we already tend towards restlessness and anxiety, these foods might feel really good because it’s sort of aligned to our nature. And Dr. Jay, my teacher would say, oh, if you’re, you know, Ayurveda constitution, you you’d already like the crackers and the salty dry foods, uh, because that’s what your nature is, but you need other foods to balance your nature. And so Rajasic foods can induce a lot of that activity. And so we’re talking here about chilies, spices, um, certain spices and then, uh, garlic and onions. So if you noticed there’s some people that really love hot sauce and they just poured on and poured on. Sometimes these are people that can be very fiery themselves.
Kimberly: 20:42 And so it’s almost like they’re attracting in. They want more of what their actual nature is. And for me, when I started to go deeper into these properties, I realized that if you live in modern life, like most all of us do. And if you live in cities, especially, there’s already a lot of SIC energy, there’s already a lot of active energy all around. And so it can be a really good idea to cut back on these foods. And for me, that meant cutting out garlic and onions. There was a time where I was cooking with them all the time. And then I just learned, and I kind of just went cold turkey. And I thought, oh my gosh, how am I gonna be able to flavor foods and soups and all these things without them. And you find ways I just started diversifying herbs and spices a lot, and I don’t miss them.
Kimberly: 21:37 And if I go to a restaurant and I, and I taste onions and garlic, it does taste very strong to me. So it’s not that you have to give up these foods altogether. I just wanna be clear here it’s that we wanna have a balance. So it’s just understanding that excessive chilies and garlic and onions, it really has an effect on your body. You may notice yourself starting to sweat. You may notice your heart rate racing up, it’s speeding up the body, uh, bodily systems. And so it’s in a way, if we do this in excess, it’s taking us away from the Sattvic thick quality of harmony and centeredness and mildness and peace. So we can have some, and especially if we were feeling a little sluggish or, you know, really just depends on our constitution as well. But if we start to notice that we’re feeling that excessive heat, that excessive stress restlessness, again, it goes back to being stewards of our own energy and realizing that, Hmm, maybe I wanna cut back on some of these foods a bit.
Tamasic foods and which are nutritionally worthless
Kimberly: 21:37 Okay. Then the third class of food is Tamasic and it says here, foods that are nutritionally worthless, inspi, Patriot, stale, refuse, and pure are enjoyed by Tamasic persons.
Kimberly: 22:56 So what this means is that these are foods that are decaying. So leftovers that have been around for a really long time, old foods, processed foods, we don’t really wanna eat a lot of these foods in our, um, in our diet. We wanna have more fresh foods. Now, also this, this sort of fermented quality is also, um, associated with cheese. So another reason not to have dairy meat there’s for some great, fresh, not cheese and plant-based cheeses. And so, um, it goes on to say proper diet is a vast subject onto itself. One that captivates many health fattest often to his detriment. So what
Kimberly: 23:44 He’s saying here is we don’t need to, we don’t need to obsess, and I’ve been there, <laugh>, it doesn’t have to be so complicated once we understand these energies, it just becomes a lot easier in learning how to eat. He says, da da, da, the vibratory harmony, and balanced nutrition of a SU big diet restraining, and temptation towards greed or overeating provides not only good health, vitality and longevity, but also works on the mind to nurture a calm contented, cheerful disposition, inclined towards goodness and spiritual aspirations. So as we continue to put food in our body and we continue to eat day in and day out, there is a vibratory effect. There is an energetic effect. So we wanna look at our intention, what is it that we wanna create in this life? And so I can say, I’m not gonna assume, but if we’re here together on this, on this podcast, we wanna feel good.
The crossover between Rajasic and Tasic foods when it comes to animal products
Kimberly: 24:44 Right? Name the podcast is feeling connected, feeling, um, nurtured, feeling, energetic, feeling the full pulse of our vitality, feeling creative and peaceful and full of love and feeling health and harmony in the body. So these are the foods that we wanna primarily put on our plates. And now we talk a little bit more about Rajasic foods, and this is, he goes down to talk about you down to talks about undue stimulants and so hot, spicy salty, and otherwise strong flavors of most Rajasic foods indicates they’re stimulating qualities. And this is where we get into talking about the cross. There is some crossover between Rajasic and Tasic foods when it comes to animal products. And again, I wanna preface this by saying that it is not all or nothing. We’ve always said that in the community, if you choose to eat animal products, as I know many people that do, I have many friends and people in my life that do you wanna balance that with the suic foods in the purest sense, though, the yoga masters and the great gurus like Yogananda did teach a vegetarian diet.
Kimberly: 26:06 And this is again for me personally, everybody has to do what’s best for themselves and feel that intuition for me personally, this was the initial reason that I decided to go plant based. So yoga down goes on to say, eggs are considered Rajasic. So also are certain meats, fish fell and lamb, any items of their excess. Again, excess that overstimulate the life forces, which feed the senses and nervous system are to be a issue where they will produce discomfort and disease in the body and mental agitation and distress. It goes on to say Gita’s description of Tamasic foods is graphic. A Tamasic diet has a malignant effect on the body and the mind and dulls all aspirations for spiritual growth among the most Tamasic foods commonly consumed in modern society are the meats of higher forms of animal life, especially beef and pork and products made from them, both chemically and vibrationally.
Kimberly: 27:07 These are highly injurous to the body and the spiritual nature of man. So as we spoke about with Tasic foods, there’s a decay in quality. And the truth is that when an animal is killed, it does start to decay immediately upon its death. And so from a vibrational standpoint, the Gita is showing us that if we wanna be vibrationally vibrant, and we wanna be alive, we do not wanna put decaying products, decaying food in our body will take down our life force. It is decaying literally. And as this crosses over into Western science, we know that eating an excessive animal products does create stagnation in our GI tract. It doesn’t have any fiber. So it’s very laborious to digest and expel. There’s a lot of energy that goes into that there’s acids that are produced. There’s a lot of pressure that this type of metabolism metabolizing, these foods puts on our liver and our kidneys, which then slows down overall detoxification in the body.
Kimberly: 28:19 So then our bodies do over time, become dollar. We can say slower to recuperate, age faster. This is not the quality of subject foods, right? So we wanna just make sure that we understand the energy behind this. Because if we look at diets that are promoted today, cap, paleo, or keto, or the carnivore diet, it’s based on things like cutting weight and you know, different formulas. But in what we’re talking about today is about the energetics. So there’s a reason, and this is, you know, this feels a line to me. Again, I’m not preaching this. You can take what resonates with you and leave behind the rest. It makes sense that if we are living beings or taking dead animals and putting them in our system day in and day out three times a day, we’re going to feel more of that lethargy. We’re gonna feel heavier.
Kimberly: 29:18 And you know, this quality of a Hima, which is nonviolence. We know that some, somebody is killing the animal. There is some form of violence there. And so when we choose to eat it, whether we’re killing the animal or we’re buying it in the store, we’re supporting that. So everything goes down to energy. And again, it’s not all or nothing. You may choose to eat some animal. And hopefully a lot of plant foods at every meal load up on the salads and the veggies and the fruit as well, and create a balanced diet for yourself. The goal and intention of this podcast is to share what the ancient teachings and the gurus, especially Yogananda are saying about food from this perspective, from the perspective of wanting to feel peaceful in the mind, and to grow spiritually in connection and love and compassion. And so it’s very clear.
Kimberly: 30:09 It’s written out here and it goes deeper and deeper. But again, I just, um, I read the Gita over and over again. I just love this text so much. It offers me so much. I recommend getting Yogananda’s commentary. We will link to it in the show notes, The Bhagavad Gita, Royal Science of God realization by Royal Science of God-Realization by Paramahansa Yogananda, it’s quite long. So I encourage you to take your time reading it and I’ve read it several times.
