This week’s topic is: How Nature Can Actually Energize your Body and Improve Quality of Life
This may be something that you’ve really felt intuitively. I know I have. Just being outside more and more. I feel like my life is calling me to be in nature more and to set up my life schedule, my attention, my focus to be outside more with my family and with myself. You might have felt that call, and it’s nice to see that there is a lot of emerging research around this.
There are specific reasons and once we understand more about these reasons, we can create more access in our lives to nature when we see the benefits. And it’s so great because it’s free and hopefully easy for us to create.
It’s about simplifying rather than trying to, you know, create more appointments to get reservations into certain restaurants and exhibits and events, which is great as well. We can just simply turn to the outdoors more and more for natural healing and resilience and balance and very real benefits to our health, vitality and our wellbeing.

Question around the topic of: How Nature Can Actually Energize your Body and Improve Quality of Life: Kimberly – when I am in nature I always feel more connected to myself and at ease. Do you think being in nature can improve the quality of life?
Okay, let’s get right into our show today about nature and how this energizes us and improves the quality of your life. Our question today comes from Deborah, who lives in California. Hello, Deborah, My Californian native neighbor, at least at this moment. I am in California <laugh> right now for a period of a few weeks before we head back to Hawaii. And Deborah, you write Kimberly, when I am in nature, I always feel more connected to myself and at ease. Do you think being in nature can improve the quality of my life? So the answer is yes. I’m gonna go skip right to some research for our discerning mind because as I mentioned intrinsically and naturally we feel good when we sit in the park or we go to the edge of the ocean or we take a walk in nature, whether that’s a trail or a hike or through a field, or if you have a young child pushing a stroller down a path or taking a vacation with your friends to an adventurous place and doing new things in nature, whether it’s zip lining or swimming or hiking or whatever it is.
So there is a term that has come out of Japan and research out Ofan Japan, which is shinran yoku. So I heard a lot about Shinran Yoku when I was traveling in Japan and it is about forest bathing. And the research found that just walking in the forest, spending time in the forest actually has tangible benefits to our nervous system functioning to our heart condition. So it’s very beneficial for cardiovascular function and it actually reduced bowel disorders. So this is interesting, this connection between being in the forest and our bowel. Why is this, we could say, So we’ll continue with a little bit more research here where this, um, is another study we’ll link to found that nature helped an emotional regulation and improved memory functioning. And this was
In conjunction with studying people that went on the nature walk. So we think, how can all these things actually be related? How can walking in the forest help with my bowels? Well, we know that digestion is this really important, very energy intensive, very sensitive function in our body, and it does everything from allow us to extract vital nutrients, cleanse, waste. We know now that it has such an important role in regulating our microbiome, our neurotransmitters, our moods, our immunity. So everything is very much related. So forest bathing, just going in nature where things are not rushed, things are as they are, this quality of isness, not shouldness. I shouldn’t be this perfect branch of a tree. I should be faster in my growth. All of this is completely irrelevant in nature. Nature is this isness, this beingness, this optimal just, you know, beyond mindfulness, which is awareness of what’s in our surrounding.
Isness even goes beyond that. It’s understanding that beyond what we are consciously aware of with our minds, as in mindfulness, there is this higher, greater intelligence running through all things. There’s an energy that we can perceive with our eyes and there’s an energy beyond our eyes, which we can learn to perceive with our third eye, through meditation of just stillness and this profoundness of beingness, we can contemplate these great truths, quantum physics, where the center of the galactic universe is everywhere at the same time. Meaning that when we’re in nature, we’re just in this profound moment. So what that does to our bodies is it brings us into regulation within our bodily systems so that our nervous system starts to relax down. We’re not in this hijacked state of low grade inflammation all the time, but we come into our natural circadian, invi and, and bodily rhythm.
So this means that automatically our immune system starts to become more regulated and then our digestive system, which is tied to our nervous system and our endocrine system and our immune system starts to regulate itself. So it means without rush, without hurry, which results in diarrhea and indigestion without para paralysis and anxiety, which can also result in constipation and bloatedness, we come into this beautiful, sacred, perfect rhythm of nature in our own bodies. The sync of patient that happens when we are absorbing the beautiful harmony of the nature around us, it actually regulates our bodies. So click to the show notes over@mysona.com if you wanna see how this
All ties together from a scientific perspective. Continue a little more here. Where another study found that depression, those suffering from depression, very, very much benefited from nature walks. So again, depression comes from, you know, there’s many complexities and depression. We have other shows on depression if you wanna click to them in the show notes as well. But depression comes from overthinking. You know, seeing, seeing lack, or just feeling a real sense of lethargy and heaviness and nature can help in liven us as we breathe in the fresh air. As we take a walk in nature, we realize that we don’t have to get somewhere. Life isn’t about this place where we should be. We are just showing up moment to moment and we can more enjoy the sacredness of each moment. Now the research found that being in nature reduced cortisol and stress and that nature walks helped to increase energy, attention, and focus.
So we can see Deborah and all my beloveds listening to this, that there is very tangible benefits to being in nature and there is this transfer of negative ions right into our bodies through grounding if we’re taking our shoes off and stepping in nature. So what’s really profound about this is quantum physics goes on to show that things aren’t really solid. That even when you shake someone’s ha hand, there’s a transfer of electrons. There’s always energy that’s moving around. So the more we place ourselves physically in nature, we have this really healing space. It’s sort of like crystals in a room can help stabilize energy and being in nature can really just help impart us these beautiful qualities. So because we know that nature can help decrease our stress, it can give us energy, it can help clear our head. When we get into overthinking mode, when we are in unnatural environments such as with artificial lights and lots of radiation and devices and plugs and all sorts of computers and screens and things going into nature creates this real purity and we can feel more grateful and in awe of life just as it is right now.
For me. I feel that where I am in my life, I can really appreciate nature as well. I’ve lived in big cities, I’ve lived in Sydney, I’ve lived in London, outside London, I’ve lived in New York City and I really vibed with all the culture aspects of that part of my life. But underneath all these human ideas, there is this real purity of spirit. And you can feel
Universe, you can feel God in the nature. And so for me, when I’m in the waterfalls in Hawaii, which we’re so grateful to do the land here in California, it speaks to me in a way that is so comforting and stilling and profound and I get all these really big creative ideas when I’m on my nature walks. So what I recommend to you is to look at your daily schedule and see where you can shift things to be more outside. Now we’re coming into fall and of course winter. And so of course it’s weather dependent where you live, but where can you, where it’s bris outside even? Where can you go for a walk? Take your coffee or your tea or hot water with lemon with you? Where can you go for a walk or a hike instead of going to the gym? Where can you walk with a friend instead of going out to lunch or dinner?
Where can you do a hike with your dog or your pet? I don’t know what other animal you’d walk with, like a rabbit in your pocket or whatever. Where can you just take a quiet moment outside and sit instead of spending five minutes on the screen? This is very individual. I invite you to really take a moment after this podcast or sometime this week and just sit with yourself, sit with your schedule, do a meditation, feel the nature in you and all around you, and then start to feel, reflect. Where can I shift my schedule to, to be with this beautiful natural environment that is in me and all around me that I can learn to take advantage of. So it’s a powerful practice. When I did this and I looked at my schedule, I saw that as much as I loved yoga asanas, I would incorporate them sometimes into my evening stretches, but I long to be outside more.
It felt more nourishing to me to do an hour walk outside rather because I’m at a desk a lot and I’m not with my kids. I’m writing and I’m sitting a lot. So I’ve shifted my schedule in the last few years for that one hour dedicated walk. I also encourage my kids to play outside as much as possible. Fruit trees are big part of our lives both here and there in Hawaii. So we spend a lot of time gathering fruit and you know, just tending to to the garden. We’re planting keal trees in Hawaii. So there’s been a real shift with intention to moving our lives outside. We have a porch upstairs and we built, we put in built in heaters. We actually had dinner out there last night because it does get cooler sometimes in the evenings here. So because of our intention to activate that space more and put heaters, we have dinner outside a lot more.
I encourage you to take a look at your life, just knowing that the more time you spend outside, the more you regulate your system, your stress levels, your nervous system, your digestion will benefit. This is so huge to know there’s research around this. It really does work. So see, um, hopefully some of the ways I’ve brought our family more outside will also inspire you. And as always, keep the questions coming. I am here, you can send your questions over to mysollna.com. Please check out the show notes. Let me know how else I can continue to support you. This is fall. I will mention this as well. It’s a very important time to keep your digestion and check. So if you haven’t yet checked out our Solluna SBO probiotics, Detoxy and Digestive Enzymes, it’s a really important time of year to stay on top of your healthy gut, on top of your gut health and microbiome. I know I am really tending to mind very much right now as well. I’ll be back here Monday for our next solo cast or show our next interview. Till then, take care. Sending you so much love, Namaste.
