Kimberly: 00:01 Namaste loves and welcome back to our Monday interview show. I am so excited to share my conversation with Darin Olien with you today, who is such a wonderful, kind human who is doing incredible work in the world. You may recognize him from being the co-host with Zach Efron on the Emmy Award wing Netflix docu-series called Down to Earth. He is the host of the Darin Olien Show. He has a wonderful podcast as well, and he has a new book out called Fatal Conveniences. So Darin really cares, you’ll, it will come through very clearly in the show. He really cares about other humans. He cares about exposing chemicals and, you know, all these things that are harming us, which is one of the focuses of his show and his new book. He cares about these indigenous peoples. Um, he’s actually created, he’s one of the co-founders, um, or he is the founder of the brand Baras, which is this incredible super nut from Brazil.
01:06 They’re working with all these farmers and the locals to create a really sustainable product that is so high in nutrients. It has more protein and minerals than other nuts, and it has less calories. So that’s something we talk about as well. He’s plant-based. He’s just a wonderful human and he really does care, and he’s very knowledgeable about so many things. So I’m very excited to share Darin with you today.

Interview with Darin Olien
Kimberly: 00:00 I’m so glad you made it back. Even in the, the rain here, Darin. It’s, it’s beautiful. In, in California where we live, it’s everybody’s like, oh my gosh, there’s a lot of rain right now, but it’s part of the cycles of nature, for
Darin: 00:12 Sure. Yeah.
Kimberly: 00:14 <laugh>. Yeah. Well, I love having you over my house. You just, you’re one of the most interesting people, and we were just upstairs eating your amazing nuts with my hubby. What kind of nuts did you bring over? They’re so interesting. I’ve never had a nut like that.
Darin shares one of the healthiest nuts in the world
Darin: 00:29 Yeah. Yeah. They’re, they’re barukas, so they’re a barukas nut from the Savannah or the Sasha of Brazil. So most people think of Savannah’s Africa, but there’s a very interesting and very large Savannah in Brazil, which is intimately connected to the Amazon. So, uh, if the Saha provides actually most water via evaporation to this, to the Amazon. So, um, yeah. So I fell in love with, um, the nut upon first taste, and I was like, whoa. Like I’ve traveled a lot and tasted a lot of foods, and you’re like, okay, well this is maybe nutrient dense, but it tastes weird, and how do I get people to consume it? But this one was, tastes like the best version of a peanut, and it doesn’t have the issues, and it has a nutrient density that I’ve never seen. And we’ve tested it now for several years, and it blows away every nut nutritionally from a micro Yeah.
01:32 Perspective and a macro perspective. And so, uh, upon the study and the taste, I then ended up in Brazil, of course, and then realizing that it’s intimately connected to the environment by way of this tree that’s very special and a nitrogen fixer, um, and a sacred tree tree really. But it’s being threatened with deforestation. And then in order for us to gather the nuts, you, there’s no planting of it. It’s all wild. So, wow. They’re foragers and collectors, and so you have to be very connected to them and understand them. And we spent hundreds of meetings and, uh, trying to understand culture, everything from Wow. Yeah. From them, the indigenous people, all the way to researchers and understand the biome. And, you know, that’s years and years. And then you try to formulate a plan and then you formulate a way that’s fair for them. Uh, and then you work on the processing of it. And, and, and no, no one’s ever validated, uh, those steps before. Um, so, you know, um, has certification, GMP certifications, all of these, uh, custody chain. We were recently, um, tested by a third party Swiss company on our environmental good practices, and it’s scored higher than any company Wow. That they’ve seen.
Kimberly: 03:11 Well, what’s the, what’s the name of the company? We can look out for
Darin: 03:14 It. The third party?
Kimberly: 03:15 Uh, no, no, your brand.
Darin: 03:16 Oh, Barukas. Oh, yeah. So, yeah. So, uh, it’s really, really special. And, um, we have an amazing team in Brazil, just all heart-centered and got an amazing, you know, growing executive team, and we’re, we’re gonna take over the nut industry.
Kimberly: 03:38 I love it.
Darin: 03:39 And do good in the process.
Kimberly: 03:41 Well, because, you know, there’s people that see trends, right? Oh, like, look, ashwaganda is getting trendy, or this nots getting trendy and they come into it from a financial Yeah. Perspective. But you dared are no, you’re the super food hunter. This is one of your, you know, nicknames. You’re looking around the world, and if anyone checks out Darren’s work or looks on his social media, the love mm-hmm. The authenticity is coming through. Like, he’s, he’s hugging these beautiful children from around the world. You care so much, you’re so passionate. You’re living it. You’ve been plant-based for a really long time, and you’re finding exciting things to bring to the marketplace, which just shows there’s, there’s magic still in the worlds a lot of magic. There’s things we can create, there’s things we can find, but doing it in a mindful way Yeah. Um, as an extension of your heart. And that’s very different. Mm-hmm. <affirmative> than you can tell, you know, when people are just sourcing stuff. We were, we were talking about Expo West this big show last week. Yeah. It’s always like, okay, what’s hot? What’s trending? Let me jump on this. A lot of brands are app approaching things from that way, which is not of the heart. Right. You may make some money. Right. But maybe not for long term. It’s very limited for sure. It’s not win-win
Darin: 04:46 A hundred percent. Yeah. Yeah. And you, you, you know, I don’t know if a regular consumer can tell that, but, you know, it’s easy to get caught up in marketing stories and all of that stuff, and it’s a very different thing. But I do believe in people. I, I believe that they do have their radar. Um, it’s just we’ve become a little apathetic in the industry of food, in the industry of supplements Hell, and, and the personal care and, and like,
Kimberly: 05:16 Yes,
Darin: 05:17 Almost any consumer good. We’ve become just, um, I, I guess I could say it this way too, accepting of, of, of things because we think that someone else has already checked these, these things for us or tested these things for us and
Kimberly: 05:36 Isn’t it? Yeah. So now, you know, you’ve taken an interesting turn in your work where when I, you know, first came across your work, it was very just kind of adventurous, global out finding, going to the corners of the earth Yeah. Finding these super foods, teaching us about all this incredible stuff out there. And then now your new book is called Fatal Conveniences, and now we’re going into the home, right? We’re going into the personal space of each person. So tell us about, you know, it’s a very interesting book, and there’s a chapter about your dad up front. Tell us how that you bridge that being superfood Hunter to now really getting into quality and toxicity within the home space.
The bridge between superfood hunter to the quality and toxicity within the home space
Darin: 06:18 Yeah, I mean, it, it, it, it, you know, I guess superfood hunting first off came by way of just needing to understand where things are from and how they’re grown and who’s connected to them. So it was always from that, let’s know, what’s going on. Right? And this is also no different in the sense that, um, you know, and, and super Foods were really just an adjunct to support a body so that people could be healthy so that they could live the life that they absolutely want to live. Yes. They never was about the food.
Kimberly: 06:56 Right.
Darin: 06:56 It became the food because it was, it’s a catalyst here in this world, we need good fuel. Um, and it’s all connected. Right. So
Kimberly: 07:06 It’s not the end goal, though, like <laugh> No.
Darin: 07:08 Yeah. So that’s why the first book, super Life was called Super Life because it, it, it was, you know, it, it’s about the foundational things that you can do so that you don’t have to drag around this chemistry set of a body and just exist. Right. So that was the first, you know, so yeah, spending tons of time, uh, in 20 years, uh, running all over the place, uh, and still love to do it, just don’t do it as much. And, um, so the other chapter was this thing that’s been happening in my life since the nineties, and that is my father, uh, like, again, I talked to it in depth in the book, but, uh, my dad, um, suffered chemical sensitivity before it was a term anyone knew about. So this was in the nineties. And so my dad was diagnosed by someone in Minnesota that was a, Hey, you, you seems to be neurologically and chemically and biologically you’ve been, you’ve been, you’ve been, uh, affected by these smells. Hmm. Colognes and fragrances and shampoos and deodorants and off gassing of, uh, azo dyes from the, from shirts and whatever else. And so my dad and I was in college still. And so, you know, if I was coming home to see my dad, he would’ve to send me a care package of the correct laundry detergent, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, body wash. Um, and then I couldn’t wear shirts that had print on them or anything else, just in order to see my dad.
Kimberly: 08:42 Wow.
Darin: 08:43 Yeah. And so, uh, that was the first I was like, what is going on in these products? So, and then after using them, I realized, oh, I feel better using these unscented, non-toxic products. So obviously that infiltrated my consciousness there. And then, um, and then cut to, you know, my dad passed away about 23 years ago. I jumped into superfood hunting, but on the side, I’m meeting all these other researchers, and one guy, uh, Dr. Mosen, who, Manish an Iranian incredible human, like I love this guy. And he’s still around, and he is still a badass. Um, he talked to me about the cell phone, and this was 23 years ago, 24 years ago. And he said, Hey, that’s a fatal convenience. Oh, wow. It’s great to use. And I was like, what? And then he was the first one to, to show me studies from Guy Loma response in the brain because of the electrical signal that’s being disrupted by between the RNA and the dna, which disrupts the protein, um, the synthesis, bonding, that’s all done electrical. Um, and I was like, what the fuck? Right? So, so, so then he starts to lay in these other layers of like, all this, so, you know, so Yeah. It’s
Kimberly: 10:17 Been in there for decades building
Darin: 10:19 Yeah. It’s been, it’s been on the side. So I, in my life, I always would do those things. I would,
Kimberly: 10:26 Everything’s non-toxic.
Darin: 10:27 Right. Just eliminate that stuff and, and doing the best I can, but not, you know, not going crazy. And then <laugh> layers and layers and meeting more people in the environmental space. And you’re seeing, oh, wow. Uh, what we’re doing to us, it’s inherently doing to the environment and vice versa. Yeah. So, so the, the, the microenvironment that maybe that deodorant is hurting of you, and the, the ammonium salts that are, and, and metal salts that are damaging to you and, and potentially for women carcinogenic and breast tissue, um, just in order to create that product is just horrible for the environment. So they’re, they’re, they’re, they’re tied together. Mm. So it becomes, what we’re doing is a reflection of what the world is doing. Uh, and they’re both toxic or they’re both healthy. Right. So, on the other pole, so this whole thing is like, okay, what’s next?
11:37 And I was like, well, I’m staring at this myself every day, all day. And it’s only getting worse. And more and more chemicals are being created, more and more chemicals are not being tested. And it’s, and it became this elephant in the room Mm. That I’m like, oh my God. Like, this is so scary. Because the, the weird thing is this is literally how it goes. We make a product, we throw it out there, and then if it causes damage, we’ll do something about it. If it’s at a high enough level, right. That that’s what, that’s what they do.
Kimberly: 12:19 It’s just getting approved. Yeah. It just, it’s on the shelves.
Darin: 12:23 Well, and, and not tested, not proven. It’s safe.
Kimberly: 12:28 And then there’s thousands of chemicals that are not allowed in Europe that we
Darin: 12:31 Allow. Yeah. I mean, you know, you have 60 to 80,000 chemicals created every year in our environment.
Kimberly: 12:40 Wait, so Darren, were you, were you thinking like in yourself, okay, people can eat these super foods, they can get really excited about taking stuff, but on the other hand, they’re just being doused in chemicals. Totally. So it’s like, you know, you gotta, you’re not gonna be really Well if you’re, if you had that end of it Yeah.
We discuss how we’re being doused in chemicals on a daily basis
Darin: 12:56 You, you, you’re not aware of it. So this invisible world has just beaten the hell out of you. On average. There’s about a hundred chemicals we’re being exposed to, most of which are carcinogenic and endocrine disrupting and immune compromising and free radical creating in the body every day. Hundred of which guess of those, they’re, none of them are being tested, interacting with each other. Zero doesn’t exist. So, so you have carcinogenic compounds, you’ve got forever chemicals, you’ve got Teflon derivatives, you’ve got Thalates, you’ve got formaldehydes, you’ve got, um, parabens, uh, and the list goes on and on, all interacting, you know, just a t-shirt alone, this is alarming just to create a T-shirt. There’s 8,000 chemicals that go into creating a T-shirt.
Kimberly: 13:57 Wow.
Darin: 13:57 8,000. And so you, you go, okay. Because you know that Nice.
Kimberly: 14:02 Yeah. With all the dyes and the treatments mm-hmm. <affirmative>, but if you get organic cotton, is that helping?
Darin: 14:08 It’s, it’s better.
Kimberly: 14:10 So what are you, what are you wear <laugh>?
Darin: 14:12 Yeah. I mean, number one, um,
Kimberly: 14:15 What are we supposed to wear? What are we supposed to do?
Darin: 14:17 Wear in, in the whole, you know, a third of the book, I, I spend time with solutions. Good. And it’s also, I’m, I’m working on a whole marketplace idea where, where once you come in, it’s vetted clean everything. So that’s something I’m, because I’m staring at it, going there doesn’t exist, and we need to have a solution for this stuff because the, the regulatory bodies aren’t doing their job. Right. There is no regulatory, they’re just insanely compromised. That doesn’t mean that there’s not great people in those, uh, you know, whether it’s C D C N, nih, uh, F fda, U S D A, fcc, epa, um, I I’ve read thousands of, of research articles, and, um, they know about it, but they’re just not doing anything about it. They’re not doing it effectively. So, um, yeah. We ha we have to become, um, massively, uh, in advocating for our own health in this, in this world. And so in this way, because we have these invisible, you know, not only toxins, but electromagnetic fields that, that are just ridiculously scary. So Yeah. I mean, is it a, is it something I, I wish I didn’t have to write the book. I wish I, I didn’t wanna have to write, like, I didn’t want to, I didn’t want to write this book, but I knew I had to write the book.
Kimberly: 15:51 Yeah.
Darin: 15:51 Right. And, and, and my dad, you know, it’s, it’s part of the legacy. He lives through that book. He lives,
Kimberly: 16:01 What did he pass from neurological conditions?
Darin: 16:04 No, connected to it was a, you know, it was a, it was a, I would say it’s connected. So he, he was sober for 30 years, and when he had to force retirement from the University of Minnesota, because he couldn’t be around people Oh. Because of all of the chemicals. And he tried, he tried to educate people, and like people would walk in and he’d be all, he couldn’t think, he couldn’t. Wow. So he was on, uh, disability and then that just continued to spiral him into depression. And when he would get tripped up, listen, he couldn’t be in the world hardly at all. Yeah. He couldn’t go to a place that was safe. He couldn’t go to a coffee shop that you don’t know what was the cleaners that they used and the thing, so he became a, his own prisoner, which then just got him severely depressed, and then he started drinking again, and he died of alcoholism.
Kimberly: 16:58 Hmm.
Darin: 16:59 So, um, yeah, for sure. I, I mean, watching his life Absolutely. It contributed. Yeah. You know, so Yeah. It’s, uh, um, you know, like I said, I wish I didn’t have to, but I absolutely have to. Yeah. You know, without a doubt.
Kimberly: 17:17 Create this awareness. And so in the book, Darin, you know, it’s, there’s so many things coming at us. You talked about the, uh, EMF fields. Yeah. There’s a chapter on food, which is easier for us to con to control to an extent, but what do we do about stuff like, you know, the fields around us? Like we can’t help that there’s a tower, you know, there’s grounding, ma I mean, are you suggesting we, there’s certain products we have to get, or how do we protect against the larger forces that unfortunately are in our shared space?
Creating awareness on how to protect against our shared spaces
Darin: 17:50 Yeah, I mean it, yeah, that’s a definitely a thing. Um, so just to create a context, you know, you know, they knew that when I say they, uh, the government and things like that, they knew that when we put up the first telegraph that, uh, dirty electricity was a thing. Right. It created a magnetic field and frequency generating of just electricity. And, and those things hurt the migratory patterns of birds and other mammals and things like that. And so electricity’s always been a known danger, right? Mm-hmm. But then when they started doing, uh, you know, uh, frequency generation using microwave, by the way, the, the cell phone, it is in the realm of microwave frequency. Mm-hmm. So these are microwaves that are hitting us. So whether it’s a Bluetooth, a wifi router, a cell phone, um, and the, and the fcc, uh, they have not updated their guidelines for 20 years.
19:04 Wow. So think of all the advancements of 20 years, and, and they, they go back to wallets, they go back to a thermal threat. So if it burns my, if that cell phone is next to my skin and it burns me, then that’s dangerous. But they’re not taking the account. The, the, the frequency wave, the length, the magnetic fields, they’re not taking any into the, into account. Wow. And the EPA in the nineties took this on initially, and they found that even within the telecommunications, um, companies hired their own private people to deem if these were things were safe. Even their own people, uh, one guy in particular came out and said, here’s what I found. These are potentially dangerous. We need to tell the public. And overnight, um, the E P A lost their funding for safety in this area, and it switched to fcc.
20:09 And then all of that data was just not talked about. Wow. And so then the, the, the, the, the cell phone business continues down this path of one G two G, 3g, 4g, now 5g. Um, and without a doubt, people can just remember this, that they know that it can cause tumors. They know that it is compromising of the immune system. It increases radical oxygen species. Right. Um, and they absolutely know in, in my studies, because they don’t do these on humans because you know who, who in their right mind is going to fun to study, uh, doing this. They know that it affects the fertility. Mm. So it neuters men, the motility go away. So like, what do you do? Don’t put a laptop on your lap without a shield. And there’s some great companies, one called safe sleeve, you can put mm-hmm. <affirmative> a shield on your lap, and they’ll also create distance mm-hmm. <affirmative>. So have a have a, a lap with a, like I have a lap thing that I have, and it’s just off of my,
Kimberly: 21:25 It’s not like pressing on your actual
Darin: 21:27 Organs. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And,
Kimberly: 21:28 And in your body you can feel like
Darin: 21:31 Some people are more sensitive.
Kimberly: 21:32 For sure. Yeah. It just feels wrong to me to put any sort of device on your body.
Darin: 21:36 So, so what people can do, yeah. Are, am I saying get rid of your cell phone? No, I use it too, but I are, are the whole idea of this book, you could open this book and point to a page and just read and you’ll learn something mm-hmm. <affirmative>, um, right. So it’s a resource to start this. Cuz I do fatal conveniences every week on my show. I talk about something that’s like, oh, hey, were you aware of, uh, you know, dental floss, uh, that has that slippery stuff on it? Well,
Kimberly: 22:09 Oh crap and toothpaste. Like, we’re putting in our mouth
Darin: 22:12 <laugh>. Right, right. Exactly. So I have this other company I use called Bite. And so it gets rid of,
Kimberly: 22:17 Oh yes, we’ve done some ads here for them.
Darin: 22:19 So good. Um, I’m addicted to the little crunch now, but, and then sustainable packaging and stuff too. But, um, so from, just to complete the thought on the cell phone, never put it up to your head ever. Right. Under any circumstances. And, and the fine print is nine inches to the clo too close to the body is, is, is a warning on the actual fine print of the cell phone manufacturer.
Kimberly: 22:48 Wow. Nine inches.
Darin: 22:49 Right. So, um, don’t put it up to your head use speaker phone or plug back in and do not use Bluetooth.
Kimberly: 22:59 Yeah.
Darin: 22:59 Because it’s the same frequency. It’s just a lower aptitude. So it’s not as strong, but it’s the same frequency in those frequencies show that they’re de still detrimental. So imagine now you’ve stuck Bluetooth in your, in your head. You
Kimberly: 23:16 Mean like EarPods EarPods, yeah. All way. So I, I still use a wired set.
Darin: 23:21 Keep it wired.
Kimberly: 23:22 Yeah. Keep it wired. And some people make fun of me, and I’m like, no, I I have heard that Darren. Believe me.
Darin: 23:27 Yeah. It’s, it’s better. I want to have, start a whole campaign called hashtag plug back in. Love it. Right. Um, and then there’s great, there’s great, um, more reduction stuff that you can do. Um, there’s a company, there’s a German company that’s doing some very cool technology that’s, uh, university tested, research verified, uh, called Wave Guard. And so they’re creating natural tural fields where cell phones and wifi doesn’t work in that field. And you can put one in your house. And so it’s literally creating this wow. Invisible bubble around you. And verified, I’ve seen the research, I’ve talked to the researchers and it’s, it’s wild. Right? So they’re using, they’re using frequency generation against the, the detrimental frequency generation of this stuff. And then you can use things like safe sleeve. So I have a, a sleeve on my case, on my cell phone that has a lead shield that’s FCC verified in the third party lab that minimizes exposure.
24:37 And then putting a live phone in your pocket is insane. Right. Again, fertility, uh, endocrine disruption increase, uh, immune response. Not a good thing. So don’t keep your, and please women do not put a cell phone in your bra. Oh gosh. And like all I’ve seen so much of that. Oh. And they’re working out, stretch me out. And then people throw their cell phone if they’re just, you know, in the car and they throw it on their lap and it’s like sitting on their crotch, uh, it is just emitting these electromagnetic fields and it’s just horrible. Wow. Like it, the, the, the, there’s so many studies that no one knows about mice and mammals and, and birds and like, it’s, it’s just a dangerous, so yeah. EMFs is a really, um, I, you know, I, I could have done a whole book on <laugh> on EMFs cuz it’s just so deep and gnarly.
25:32 Um, so you, so the whole thing that, the whole premise of the book is, is learn and then just apply. Right. Learn and apply the next thing that you can do. So just like, you know, two steps, you and I never ended up plant-based. We had to take, you know, it was a journey to get there. And then, you know, we just, it’s all a journey to just improving. Right. And that’s all this is this, this is a, this is a, a bit of a, a shock right. At first for people. A lot of this stuff, it’s like, yeah, I don’t get why it’s in there. I don’t know why they’re putting forever chemicals. I don’t know why they’re putting plastics and petroleum, uh, on your children’s clothes. I don’t know why they’re putting fire retardants plain. I know it’s crazy in pajamas. Like, you know, these things are dangerous and they do not stop fire. So there’s no reason, there’s zero reason they need to put any of this stuff in there and it’s harming. Um, you know, so Yeah. It’s a, it’s a, it’s a crazy, crazy thing, but we need to be aware of it because we have the, we have the power. Yeah. We, we have the numbers.
Kimberly: 26:47 Well, we have to have the awareness. Yeah. And, and one thing, Darin, that we’ve spoken more about food, and there is a food chapter here. But one thing that I really like about your approach and the way you’re teaching people, um, there is this powerful element of simplicity. Like, we can do it, like, going back to the nuts, for instance, right. Sometimes people get so overwhelmed, like, how am I supposed to eat plant-based? I have to learn a million different recipes. I have to do all this stuff. And I just say, you know, recipes can be there if you need them. You know, we put recipes out, but I don’t personally follow recipes, Darin. Right. It’s just so simple how I eat, right? Yeah. It’s like kale. And then here’s nuts and there’s quinoa. And like, when I see the way you eat and you’re, you know, this big strong dude, everybody look up Darin Ion’s Instagram and you’ll see here is a like a, like a qualitatively mighty human who’s eating. Tell us a little bit about you eat two meals a day. Yeah.
A day in the life of eating plant-based with Darin Olien
Darin: 27:43 Yeah. I mean, I just
Kimberly: 27:44 Simple spirulina beans.
Darin: 27:45 Yeah. I, I had, I had spirulina and, and a bunch of fruit this morning and some barass and, and then, you know, uh, I usually, you know, it’s a massive salad in the afternoon with more barass and stuff like that. And then, um, you know, I’ll, but it, it’s all centered around my massive Sal sprout. I’ll do, you know, I’ll like, I I love a good, you know, rice cake and, and uh, avocado and stuff like that. But, um,
Kimberly: 28:17 Delicious.
Darin: 28:18 Yeah. It’s just like, I, I don’t, you know, and you could probably say this too, that I, I, I, I don’t miss anything. Like, I don’t, no. Like, I, I celebrate the just extraordinary food every meal. I feel like it’s just like ridiculous.
Kimberly: 28:39 Amazing. But the, that, that comes from stripping back, right? It’s like this simplicity. Yeah. And that, I feel like that’s the through line of what you’re embodying is saying, oh, here are these delicious nuts. You don’t need, you know, all the processed food with all the crap. And this is where a lot of the chemical trail is. Right. And so when I look at your book and I think about my life, about how I’ve, you know, just simplified, simplified. Like, I don’t wear a lot of makeup. I don’t have a lot of few beauty products, but it’s like when we get healthier and we have more energy, we experience, there’s more of this radiance that comes through and you, like, I don’t have a lot of cleaning products. We have like a non-toxic one. You can use one vinegar, you can kind of use the same stuff. And it’s all this marketing that makes us think that we need to buy like a hundred products in every category. Totally. So like, simplicity is a big theme. Wouldn’t you agree, Darren? A hundred
Simplicity is key when it comes to stripping down processed foods
Darin: 29:28 Percent. Yeah. It’s, we don’t have to be, we’ve been, this is just being duped into thinking that these things are something else. But, but yeah. It’s, uh, you know, you know, lotions pretty much putting on the body, for example, baguette, more lotion like it Yeah. It hurts the, it hurts the layers and the dermis layers of the skin and like, doesn’t allow for hydration. And so you can use like coconut oil, you know, there’s just simple, simple things. But you know, it’s like this, the, the wrong side of capitalism, right? Mm-hmm. <affirmative>, so mm-hmm. <affirmative>. But I, you know, you know, it’s, it’s, you know, from personal care to, you know, the perfect shampoo and like, I, I can’t smell any of that stuff anymore. It’s just, it’s so, it’s, it’s uh, it’s invasive.
Kimberly: 30:15 It’s invasive. And I had to say, there’s, um, when people wear really strong cologne and they go to like hug you, oh my God. And then it gets on my sweater all day and I almost get like, take it off a little bit. I don’t say angry, but I’m like, now it’s stuck on me. Stuck. Yeah. Your chemicals don’t come on me
Darin: 30:33 <laugh>. Yeah. And it’s this chemical romance that we, uh, you know, and again, that, that is not a good thing. That is a dangerous, I think a dangerous thing, you know? And these people are smelling, think about it like you are waking up and God forbid you’re drinking tap water, right? So you got all these, these chemicals and, and Astra and other pesticides,
Kimberly: 31:00 Arsenic, trace levels of arsenic. Yes. We got our water tested here. It was 432 times the safe arsenic level Oh my god. Here in the mountains. Right? So we got a whole house filter and then a water filter as
Darin: 31:12 Well. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. So then boom, you’ve, you’ve taken care of that. So, you know, you start with the water, you drink, and then you jump in a shower, and then you, you’re sucking in more of that stuff in the shower. Then you’re slathering on the shampoos and the conditioners and the body washes. And then you get out of the shower and, and then you put on the lotion and they, you know, so, you know, and the, the, the, the colognes and the perfumes and the, and the,
Kimberly: 31:39 But for, for breeze in the air <laugh>, oh my god. Don’t even star me off. Oh man. Oh my. If you go into an Uber or back in the day, like a taxi that had that, that that tree. Yeah. You know what I’m talking about? I forget.
Darin: 31:52 Totally know what that is.
Kimberly: 31:53 <laugh>, that’s that air freshener tree.
Darin: 31:55 I was in London and a guy, I stepped in that car and I should have gotten out, but I literally opened the window ahead of my head out Oh my god. For 20 minutes because it was like, I felt abused.
Kimberly: 32:06 Well, dare dar, let’s say someone’s listening to this. Yeah. And they’re like, oh man, this is scary. There’s a lot. I’m on a limited budget mm-hmm. <affirmative>. So I can’t put a whole house filter in or I can’t do that Toro field thing. Yeah. What are some simple things? Because I also wanna get across that this book, and Darren is in Incre, you, you are incredibly accessible. This isn’t just for like a small percentage of people that can like buy all this stuff. So what would you say? Like what are some things that are accessible to everybody?
Accessible and budget-friendly DIY tips to clean up your home space
Darin: 32:35 Yeah. Yeah. So I mean, the number one I put a lot is like several DIY stuff in the book too. So you can make your own laundry detergent. You can make amazing, make your own, um, hell shampoos. And
Kimberly: 32:49 Do you do that a lot? Do you do diy?
Darin: 32:51 Yeah, yeah. Yeah. It’s easy to do. And, uh, you just
Kimberly: 32:55 Make it in bulk.
Darin: 32:55 Yeah. You make it in bulk, put it in a mason jar and a away to go. Um, it’s, it’s, and then once you get in the flow of all of it, it’s just quite easy. But in terms of water, since we talked about water, you know, a a you could get an ro system, reverse osmosis system underneath the counter, and at least now you have drinking water and cleaning your vegetables and whatever else, and cooking with, and that you can get for a hundred, 200 bucks. Right. Um, so at least now, but, but keep in mind drinking that you need to add some electrolytes back into it. So like some good unrefined salt, a pinch per glass or something like that. But that will help on a hydration level as well. So at least now you’ve cleaned, um, some very dangerous and as you know, like our snic, oh my god, <laugh>, uh, heavy metals and things like that, um, out of your, um, uh, out of your water. Um, I think and, and personal care. Yeah. You, you like, what I see is people just doing the same thing without the, just without asking a question. Right. So they like, oh, that’s the smell I’m used to. So I get that tide laundry detergent, and you’re just like completely blasting yourself with, um, carcinogenic, by the way, fragrances. So fragrances that are show up in everything. Right? They, they have so many loopholes that, um, if they deem any part of their formula a trade secret, they literally do not have to tell anybody.
Kimberly: 34:32 Wow. So, and it’s, it’s not useful. It’s just to get you hooked on the product. There’s no efficacy to this. Yeah. Or fragrance.
Darin: 34:38 Yeah. Or it’s cheap or whatever. But it’s, but these things are, are largely, there was several studies that 50 to 70% of them are carcinogenic. So again, you, you’re dealing with something that no one’s testing these for safety. They’re experimenting on you. Um, so you have to break the cycle of that’s what you like, for example, laundry. Right. You think, well that’s, that’s what I believe is clean. Right? So there’s several, um, laundry choices that you can make now with natural essential oils and things like that. Or do some diy, some sodium bicarbonate and things like that. Um, also a nice hydrogen, or it’s great for whites as well. So get some, some big bulk hydrogen peroxide and you can do things like that. Um, but yeah, there’s a, you know, um, you know, and you know, just sticking on food for a second, like, you know, nature already created food, right? And it’s processed for you. Uh, it’s created for you. So, you know, peel of banana need it. It’s the greatest.
Kimberly: 35:50 Wait, did you were telling me in, in hubby about, uh, a fast food post. You did tell us.
Darin: 35:54 Yeah. Yeah. I haven’t lost, but it’d probably be about out by the time it
Kimberly: 35:59 <laugh>. Yes, it
Darin: 36:00 Will. So yeah, it was, uh, um, I, I, I had a confessional, a confessional of, um, uh, I, I wanted to tell all the followers that I had eaten and was going to eat more fast food today. And so, uh, I was having this confessional and then I turned the camera and it was, it was a dragon fruit and banana and an apple and dates and goji berries,
Kimberly: 36:27 <laugh>.
Darin: 36:28 And they’re pick it up and eat it. Pick it up and eat it. It’s fast and it’s convenient. And, uh, the only thing processing, processing it is my microbiome. So it’s ultra processed to my microbiome <laugh>.
Kimberly: 36:42 And, and, and by the way, it tastes delicious. That’s the best. They’re always trying to like, emulate. And you look at the foods like targeted at kids, it’s a lot of concentrates. Like Yeah. Mango concentrate. You could just have a mango. Yeah. You know what I mean? Mean, and it is actually a lot, um, more, it’s more affordable. Yeah. All these like packaged things, they’re always trying to market to moms think. And people
Darin: 37:05 Think about a date, right? Yeah. If you have a date and you give that to any person on the known planet, it’s a nature’s candy. Yeah. Come on.
Kimberly: 37:13 Packed with calcium.
Darin: 37:15 Yeah. And you shove few baras in there and it’s like, oh my god, it blows my mind. <laugh>. You know, it’s like, wow. Yeah. It’s just like, I love that alchemy and that combination of foods and things like that too, because it’s just like, ah, you can’t possibly recreate that You can manipulate, right? Yeah. And through our food systems, right? So we are, we are just dangerously sick, right? And the Mayo Clinic had this, um, study with longevity and exercise very conservative. It wasn’t like extreme anything. It was just like, Hey, do you fair eat fairly well? Do you move, do you have a healthy lifestyle? Only 2.7% of all Americans were deemed healthy.
Kimberly: 38:02 Wow.
Darin: 38:03 2.7, not 20%, 2.7. Right. So, you know, what are we doing right? What are we doing? Let’s, I think, you know, one of the pillars of this book is looking at the systems that are just wildly broken and unregulated. Yeah. Like, so, so all I want is I want, I really, another kind of intention is I wanna wake up the mama bears of the world cuz they control Oh yeah. The children, they control in a good way and they control the household and they, you know, and it’s like when you realize that those disposable diapers are petroleum based full of plasticizers and thalates that literally are soaking into your child through its skin, through its fertility organs Hmm. And causing them further and further infertility and neutering your child upon its very trying to live. Um, it’s, it’s, it’s a crime. Like there is so many, this, this is just, it’s like, again, like I, I can’t believe that I have to write this book.
39:25 I and others have written great books on Dr. Leo Tre Sande, who I’ve met, wrote an amazing book, amazing researcher on endocrine disruption and all the chemicals and things too. But it’s like, what are we, like how is this like my Minnesota brain, my small town kid that believes everyone’s honest, and I literally can’t get my hat around every time I do a fatal convenience, whether it’s in the book or on my podcast, I, I, I literally in my head going, what the fuck is going on? Yeah. I don’t understand. How has it come to this? How is it that this product and this chemical when they know it’s dangerous, when they know it’s endocrine disrupting, when they know it’s carcinogenic, when they, they they know it’s connected to testicular cancer and kidney cancer and breast cancer and asthma and, and they still throw it in their production line in their, to produce a perfect, you know, shirt that, that is, is, is form fitting.
40:31 Like what the hell? You know? So I just, it’s just on and on and on. And then they throw, you know, these forever chemicals that bioaccumulate and then they go, oh, it’s a, it’s a bib on your baby that’s easy to wipe off. Isn’t that convenient? It’s full of Teflon derivatives that are connected to all of these things and accumulate in your child. And so we are all born into, you know, it is, it’s no one’s fault everyone living today. It’s not our fault. We were born into this, you know, and, and, you know, environmental working group did a study where there was about, um, on average 206 chemicals in the umbilical cord of most children being born today. Right. So they’re already being born into it. They’re, and most of those are carcinogenic. So it’s crazy. Right. And the bodies are resilient, but we’re getting the crap beat out of us.
41:33 Right. Living inside where the, where those chemicals, there’s about 75 chemicals in our environment, in our homes that we’re being hit with every day that are dangerous. And, and we still buy these products. We still can buy these products. So we need to wake up. So if you’re hearing this today, it’s just the awareness. I didn’t make this up. I wish I didn’t have to write it. It’s here. This is what’s going on. So, you know, hundreds and hundreds of cited research articles in the book, um, and had about 15 to 20 researchers and, and wow. Professional fact checkers and all of this stuff to just go, whoa, man. Um, I don’t know why the EPA doesn’t do their job. I don’t know why the FCC doesn’t, I don’t know. I mean Yeah, of course I can make, it’s,
Kimberly: 42:26 It’s money <laugh>. Yeah, yeah. Of course. We knows people are profiting left and right, sadly. Well,
Darin: 42:32 That’s the
Kimberly: 42:33 God we don’t wanna believe. Yeah. That is the reason. Yeah. But what else pull the string us would be po poisoning people.
Darin: 42:40 It’s the God that we have deemed more, um, worthy than the health and safety of, of us as humans. So the prophet, yeah. The, the god of profit some somehow has become okay for, like, there’s several times I was, you know, reading something and the FDA would write an article on the very thing that was dangerous, but yet wouldn’t regulate it in their products.
Kimberly: 43:10 Isn’t that crazy?
Darin: 43:11 Like, what’s going, this is so this is, is anyone else seeing this? This is crazy. What do you mean? Wait, <laugh>, do you, do you, do you, does it make you feel better that you now know that this P f a s or this fragrance or this uh, stabilizer or this flow agent? Or is it, is it, do you feel better that you wrote an article about it, you’re not regulating it that shouldn’t be in a product, right? So Yeah. Yeah. Anyway, it’s, it’s, uh, the whole point is that I don’t want people to be a victim. And if you don’t, if you’re not aware of this stuff and just out there buying products without the consciousness that many of the personal care and home products and, and clothing and, uh, bathroom materials, and if you’re not aware that, uh, of what you’re buying, uh, you without a doubt are buying things that are not good for you.
Kimberly: 44:17 Right. Yeah. Well, thank you for having the, the courage to write this book, Darin, because I know it’s really fun talking about the super foods and every, you know, I included love looking at your pictures and the adventures, and that’s part of it too. But again, in the home space, stuff’s going on that needs to be brought forward. Yeah. And also just embodying, um, because you know, this, this light that you have there, it’s, it’s fun, it’s accessible, but there’s this power. And again, just being like more simple. So part of it is switching to cleaner products. But I also believe too, Darin, part of it is that we don’t need to buy as much stuff in general. Totally. We don’t need all the clothes all the time. Fashion industry, so toxic. We don’t need every single beauty product and every single cleaning product, it can get paired down and then we save money and then we actually feel and look healthier. There’s just a deeper glow and radiance that comes from the inside because we aren’t doused with chemicals and we have more freedom. And the simpler life does make us happier. Totally
Darin: 45:14 <laugh>. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I like the, you know, clothing is something I’ve been, um, I’m really kind of passionate about now because number one, you see so much toxicity in it. And number two, when you, like, when I find like these upcycled, you know mm-hmm. <affirmative> clothes and that are one thing, like, you know, blue jeans are just gnarly and toxic as hell. Right. And, but, but don’t buy, here’s what I say, don’t buy anymore. Yeah. Right. Keep your blue jeans and the longer they live the less toxic they are. Right. So, so don’t throw away necessarily your clothes after hearing this. You, you just want to, because I I like you, I, I like to find the unique things. Yeah. Like, you know, I have, I went to, I don’t normally go to these things, but I went to, uh, Olivia Firth, uh, put on this, uh, uh, green carpet eco event.
46:13 And I had a, a buddy of mine, Jeff Garner, who was an inspiration for me in the, he’s been creating green, clean fashion for 20 years plant died and Oh, cool. So he made me the tuxedo out of organic hemp and uh, uh, the plant log wood was used to diet. Wow. And it was so beautiful. Wow. It’s so well made. Like this thing is not gonna break down for like my lifetime <laugh>, but it’s, so, but then I can use it. I can use the pants for something else and the jacket for things and like, like you said, and you just get a few of these things. And then something about it, knowing that it’s healthy and it’s clean and I know exactly what’s in it and not in it. Um, you know, so quality over just this horrible, fast fashion toxic, you know, we’re, we’re even having gotten into the, the supply chain part of it, the, the, the crazy thing about this book is it’s so individual of what we can do to change and detoxify our health and our life from all of these things. But I also touch in the environment and the downstream effect of how all those products were created. So, so it’s as simple as if it’s hurting your biome, your environment, you, it is hurting the rest of the environment by the way. It was created. And so, you know, a blue jean, you can see from a satellite, the, the rivers in China that literally turned blue because there’s no natural indigo anymore.
Kimberly: 47:52 Wow.
Darin: 47:53 It’s synthetic blue that’s dumped into the river. Right. So that’s your blue jean. And then every wash you have, because now the elastic jeans are the most popular now,
Kimberly: 48:07 The stretchy
Darin: 48:07 Ones. Yeah. So now it’s, it’s called elastin and it’s basically Lyra, so it’s petroleum. Right. Whoa. And so every wash of your blue jeans, so number one, washing that into the river from an industrial standpoint is directly into the environment. The water, the air of the sea, the animals. And now every wa so you take that gene home, every wash you put it in the washer fi, 50,000 microbits of plastic are breaking down from that and going also into the rivers, into the, into the soil and affecting and neutering the animals Wow. And the insects along the way. So it’s this vicious other cycle, right. This vicious cycle of, it’s horrible for the environment to create all this stuff. And it’s horrible for you cuz it’s also infecting your micro environments affecting you on your skin, it’s affecting your, as you wash everything. It’s like, it’s just insane.
49:09 So we, we again, I mean, um, we need to do this so that we can just be more aware and Yes. And then we can use our, our numbers and our value and our dollars to go, Hey man, I, I don’t need to buy 10 new pairs of jeans and 20 t-shirts this year. No. I can buy two and by really high quality or three and then just, or zero <laugh> or just use the weather once and, and also find a, a seamstress, find someone that can do it and then just take a couple t-shirts and go, okay, this one’s ripped. Make me a new t-shirt out of these three. Yeah. Right. And it’s fun because you have one of a kind shirt then find your style and
Kimberly: 49:51 Like Exactly. Yeah. And it’s unique to you. Yeah. But we did a, a clothing swap too with, with like 15 girls here around the area and we just said, oh, everybody brought their stuff. That was great. But you know, it’s like, it’s, if it’s not your, it’s like oh, new and and exciting again. So the 15 of us actually swapped clothes. It’s amazing. Then you have to buy stuff cuz it just becomes so clear to me. It’s like this constant, like, we don’t have to buy in, we don’t have to buy the crap. Totally. There’s no reason. Yeah. You can live a healthier life. Yep. Um, but thank you so much Darren for this book, fatal Conveniences. Tell us again where we can get it. Yeah. Tell us about where we can find out more about your amazing work and your show.
Darin: 50:29 Yeah, yeah. It’s uh, darlene.com uh, slash fatal conveniences. Or you can go to, it’s on pre-order right now, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, um, and darlene.com and the podcast, uh, the Dar Nolene show. I dive into a bunch of stuff and, uh, and yeah, Darren Alene on social. So yeah, I’m charging and um, you’re doing it. Got some things in the pipeline as well. So.
Kimberly: 50:56 Well, thank you so much for being this, a real warrior for good, for bringing so much of this to light and making it accessible and your huge heart. Darren, thank you so much. Thank you. And congrats on the new book.
